Now what? The monkeypox virus belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus in the family Poxviridae, a charming group that also includes the variola virus which causes smallpox and vaccinia virus used in the smallpox vaccine, and cowpox virus.

Health authorities in Europe, the U.S. and Australia are investigating a recent outbreak of the viral disease typically found in Africa.

President Joe Biden issued a health warning Sunday, cautioning “everybody” should be concerned about the cases of monkeypox now being detected both in the U.S. and in Europe.

The U.S. has vaccines ready to deploy that are “relevant to treating monkeypox,” a government national security adviser later further confirmed.

Biden spoke with reporters before departing Osan Air Base in South Korea for Japan, admitting his health advisers had not yet briefed him on the “level of exposure” of the disease, however he was assured it would be “consequential.”

“They haven’t told me the level of exposure yet, but it is something that everybody should be concerned about,” Biden said, The Hill reports. “We’re working on it hard to figure out what we do and what vaccine, if any, may be available for it.”

“But it is a concern in the sense that if it were to spread, it’s consequential. That’s all they have told me,” the president added.

Monkeypox is rarely identified outside of Africa, but as of Friday, there were 80 confirmed cases worldwide, including at least two in the United States, and another 50 suspected ones.

By all means lets go to General Quarters over this, it’s a virus! The facts that it is rare, treatable with existing meds, and this outbreak likely began in some bathhouse in Spain make no difference. We must be kept in a constant state of crisis, especially this close to the midterm elections.

    Meanwhile my wife’s brother, wife and 2 kids (who are now adult health care workers) have been waiting _over_ 2 years for their US Embassy (Manila) interview for immigration submitted in 2000. 😼 

    1. We feel your pain, my wife/s sister initial application was 2001, It was approved in 2009, the quota came up in 2020 and they’ve been documentation complete since Oct 2020 and we’re still waiting on the interview as well.

    Throughout history, various methods have been used to control populations. An iron fist, communism and in some cases a little more sophisticated. The early US saw such things as yellow journalism.

    Not everyone can be rich and not everyone can be happy. Greatest good for the greatest number while making sure the elite few are taken care of.

    The grand experiment in the US is that we persuade each other and everything is transparent. A battle of ideals, if you will.

    That’s the dream, anyway.

    People have gotten lazy and now resort to intimidation, lies, manipulation, coercion, etc. It is much quicker in the short run, but people eventually sour on it in the long run.

    My fear is that corruption has already begun to seep in at the cracks. Once it takes a foothold, we will be no different than Mexico or some third world country. It will still take a while because there are people that hold onto ideals, but they will be chipped away.

  21. Monkeypox infected a Sacramento individual who recently traveled to Europe. Health officials say monkeypox is rare to the United States. It is a virus similar to smallpox, but less severe. It is transmitted through close contact with bodily fluids or respiratory droplets. With that in mind, protect your precious bodily fluids. 😜
