Boomer’s Sunday

It’s time once again, Delta Whiskies and Whiskettes, for Boomer’s Sunday, where I sort through the weekly offering of ‘toons and pick the best. Toons are provided by Boomer and AW1 Scott, with many others contributing.
Disclaimer: These toons are meant to amuse, entertain and inform, pretty much in that order. While I cull what I can, they are not specifically fact-checked, so expect a certain amount of artistic license.

API, I was watching a video of a test run on Reading & Northern 2102: It’s a coal-fired steam engine.
Is it possible steam will come back as something besides a tourist attraction?

George V

There was an attempt to build a modern coal-fired steam locomotive back in the late 1970’s-80’s, the ACE-3000. Here’s a history here: https://www.american-rails.com/ace-3000.html

While it showed some promise, according to the article, the drop in oil prices in the 1980’s ultimately killed it. (Wait, did Ronald Reagan kill the steam locomotive? Say it isn’t so!)

Based on my experience volunteering at a historic steam operation, I think the labor costs would still have killed it economically.

Not to mention that 2 or 3 story tall exhaust stack, to get those coal emissions up in the stratosphere.
