I’m just the messenger on this one. These were sent to me by Shipmate Jack ET2 LPH 3. I see that the above pic of the Okie 3 was taken after the USS Stark was hit by a missile and the 4 3inch50 AA gun tub mounts were changed over to another AA system. We had 2 gun tub mounts in front of the island structure and a gun tub aft on the port and starboard sides. I used to grab some rays during chow time in the aft tubs when we operated in the Carib. If I remember correctly, I was attending the NYS Fire Chiefs Convention at the Concord Hotel at the time the Stark was hit.

The Stark was hit towards the end of my second Med. We had just refueled (I was on a replenishment oiler) her before she went through The Suez Canal. The scuttlebutt for a few days after was, as expected “We are at War” or “We’re extended for another 90 days…”, you know the drill. There are always a few guys “with the inside dope” on “what was really happening”. A Supply friend, who’s last name was Starke (with an -e), traded for one their ship’s ball caps during our UNREP. He kept it as a weird momento.
Fair winds and follows seas to those lost.

I spent a couple weeks aboard the Iwo Jima LPH 7 I believe. That was a nice ship. It was strange seeing all the florescent sea life from the fan tail at nite.

Iwo Jima was LPH 2 Guadalcanal was LPH 7

Ah yeah, LPH2
. Got my numbers mixed up. The new replacement Iwo is LPH7 I believe.
The old one went to the scrappers. I remember it as a fine ship. Hard to believe it was junked but time and rust waits for no one.

The Okie 3 went down in 2002 in a sinkex finished off by a sub torpedo. Saw a pic ov it when I googled her demise.
