Russian invaders uparmoring their trucks with wood

In all the things going wrong for Vlad in his invasion of Ukraine, now his troops are upfitting their equipment with improvised armor. Being resourceful Russians, they’re affixing tree logs and lumber to their trucks to provide additional protection.

Poetrooper sends in the article from The Drive;

Ukrainian roads have quickly become a killing ground for Russian convoys moving through hostile territory amid a reportedly worsening logistics situation. While losses of heavily armored tanks and armored personnel carriers to anti-tank weapons are piling up, far less fortified vehicles are vulnerable even to small arms fire. Losses of light and unarmored vehicles trying to ferry men and materiel to advancing Russian forces are also increasing. As a result, Russian drivers have gotten creative in fortifying their trucks for the deadly roads leading ever deeper into Ukraine.

Images of Russian KAMAZ trucks appeared Saturday showing logs stacked on the front bumper as additional improvised armor. Crews even managed to retain their distinctive “V” markings seen on Russian vehicles in the sector. Other vehicles use wood boards and junk metal to protect their most vulnerable frontal areas.

The three vehicles look to be carrying PMP pontoon bridge elements, a valuable logistics asset and one of the Ukrainian forces’ preferred targets alongside fuel trucks. A PMP bridge was likely set up over the Pripyat River in the Belarusian side of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in the final days leading up to the war.

The logs themselves appear cut from trees right behind the vehicles and are likely intended to protect the trucks’ radiators from small arms fire. The last thing any Russian vehicle crew wants is to survive an ambush only for the truck to overheat and break down nearby.

More at the source, including one Russian tank abandoned with sandbags on its turret. I’ll leave with your a few videos of Ukrainian farmers towing away Russian armor.

    1. Gotta wonder if their rations include potted meat, Vi Anny Sausages, and saltine crackers? Class VI supplies consist of Mad Dog 20/20, Colt 45 Malt Liquor, and Ripple? DaHell those troops gonna do when they run into a squad of Partisans armed with them chain saw bayonets? The Horror!

      1. Probably not Saltines. There is a shortage on right now of Nabisco crackers of all kinds. Secondary effect is that other crackers are selling out. My local commissary was zero balance on crackers last night. Once the wheat shocks hit the markets…. well I hope you are stocking up now because Biden is doing what no President has done in 60 years and bringing real hunger to America.

        1. Its been said here on this blog to “work them preps”.

The world is a pile of kindling in search of a match.

My ears are on for all who need info resources.

      2. Mad Dog 20/20, Colt 45 Malt Liquor, and Ripple

Jesus fuck. I read that and immediately though you were going to have a party with Rollo, Grady, and Woodrow.

        1. Naw Man, I do know a bit bit ’bout loggers tho. Used to run a Church for them with my Buddy Ray. Did real well with it until the squirrel went berserk.

    1. That pic looks very much like the road I grew up on. Always an adventure when the Navy nuke school students headed out to ski. Cars everywhere but on the road, 90% with Florida plates.

      1. I did ski training with about ten Navy SEAL’s in Maine back in 1972. That was the scene at the bottom of the hill, but without the cars. Boy could they drink and hit on the ladies. Although, the ones hittable were few and far between.

    2. The social media game of the Ukrainians has been excellent. In a world where social media is where kids get all their news, this is a very savvy way of writing the narrative.

  2. A Javelin would make short work of these “up-armored” trucks. I wouldn’t waste a missile on them, though.

      1. Food for thought, how many tank parts, rounds of ammo, or replacements could those trucks carry? Most definately worthy targets

  3. Bad idea putting wood on those vehicles because when it rains; the wood wood get water logged increasing the weight of the vehicles. Glad I logged on to comment this morning. See you later Alligator.

              1. A punk would say that.

                punk noun (2)
Definition of punk (Entry 3 of 3)

                2
: a preparation (as of a stick of coated wood) that burns slowly and is used to ignite fuses especially of fireworks

                      I’m done 😐

    1. Wood Ent be prudent that we be Putin this thread on the chopping block? 😆

    2. Jeff,

I bet you’ll think twice about starting up this sort of onerous Pun Fest ever again.

      Or maybe you won’t…

      1. He’s been warned before, but… um, he’ll probably stick to it.
These things sometime grow out of control but quickly burn out as the low-hanging fruit gets picked off.

                  1. What is the root cause of these puns?

Some of them may be considered chestnuts.

  4. John Deer is really getting some good advertising with all the Ukrainian farmers pulling stuff.

    1. Yep but they shut their offices down there and are losing sales there. ADM pulled out too.

    2. “Nothing pulls a Russian tank out of the mud like a Deere!”

      I think I need that on a t-shirt.

  5. The letter “V” indicates Marine infantry. The letter “Z” indicates Eastern Forces. The vehicles with the letter “A” would appear to be attractive targets. 😀

  6. Ivan and Boris commandeer a 1968 Ford Country Squire Station Wagon. They start ripping off the wood paneling. When they get done, Boris turns to Ivan and says “You know, it looked better in the box.”

  7. Wouldn’t really do much. If I bang the front of that truck with a LAAW or something bigger, it will go away right quick anyway.

  8. Could those logs be primarily for use in getting unstuck from mud?
Can’t they be placed under tires or even build a short corduroy road?
And secondary use as small arms fire protection?
