Weekend Open Thread

The King Cake is a Mardi Gras season treat. Whoever discovers the “baby” in their piece of the cake is automatically tagged to purchase the next King Cake.

Mardi Gras Season, also referred to as Carnival Season, and informally known as Epiphany Season, began yesterday, January 6, 2022. This season runs until March 1, 2022, Mardi Gras. The “King Cake” is this season’s version of the Christmas fruit cake. New Orleans usually starts its Mardi Gras parades on January 6. We are also still in the liturgical season of Christmas, which ends this Sunday. Enjoy your weekend.

    1. BOOM! Beignets and hangovers for all!

Have a great weekend y’all! Buy ammo. It’s reasonable cheap and prices seem to have plateaued a bit.

    2. Well played Good Sir…Saw you lurking and had a delayed fused round in the tube. May Kong bring you Rats as I bring you the Crown of FIRST on the Coveted Earned NEVER AWARDED FIRST Commenter of the TAH Weekend Open Thread. We Knaves await your dispensing of the snaky stuff and Class VI Supplies My Liege.

    3. Just a thought while downing a cold one at American Legion Post 138:

Claiming First on the WOT is part luck and skill. To paraphrase the Ballad of the Green Beret, five men tested today, but only one was selected.

Claiming second is a more valid test of skill if second is claimed immediately after first is claimed, but before the remainder of other claimed firsts.

(Note: I posted this comment earlier today, but to the wrong WOT. I can’t handle my beer.)

        1. I get it, I’m an idiot. Everyone point and laugh at the idiot. Post numbers are given by state, not nationally like that PoS VSO that shall remain nameless.

        2. Tampa. On the waterfront of Tampa Bay.

Come by and I will buy you a cold one, Roh-Dog.

          1. I appreciate that, Major. The air is too thick down that way for my blood. If you find yourself in Connecticut the drink is on me.

            1. Roh-Dog, I did my time in the nutmeg state. (Final army assignment.) I stayed a year after retirement (Sikorsky) but realized I lived in the wrong place when I had to wear a coat to watch the Fourth of July fireworks on Long Island Sound.

I will take you up on the drink if I find myself up there.

    4. As usual I am late to the party what was the weather and household stuff and work.
No matter my congratulations to Roh-Dawggy
And enjoy your week your Royal highness. Much love to all you freaks I am present and accounted for

      1. You know, I was thinking (and that is not often – so back up!).

I was watching a rerun of one of the Transformers movies the other night before I passed out. When all of a sudden the tv cut in to the nightly news blurb at 10 came on. In the 10 second blurb – they spoke about the Omicron variant. So I got to thinking….

What if the Transformer series came up with a Phil Monkress specific Transformer – Phildocron.

It could transform into a knock off Harley Davidson with a sidecar. It would be the weak link in the Decepticons, as well. It would be the Transformer that was always lying, faking shit and claiming glory and valor in yesteryear (or yester- millennium).

The Decepticons would know he was a clown and insult him. The Autobots would pay him no mind due to his weakness.

He could always be looking for a sweet deal through misrepresenting his claims or ripping someone off. He would not even be able to transform correctly – think the sidecar being pointed in the wrong direction, etc. Phildocron could always claim special Decepticon lineage (although unproven as well).

And the kicker – All-Points Logistics could be in cahoots with him on the side as he stole from the Decepticons as well.

        Sky is the limit.

        Thoughts?

        1. Will he have a sidekick that turns into a 1980’s Jag that leaks oil and has a mailbox with no door for a head?

              1. Bernathatron! Seriously, who else could fit such an important role? And he’d never check to see if there were sufficient Energon cubes to get to their destination.

  1. Darn … darn … darn!

Congrats to Roh-Dog on being FIRST for the WOT! In your honor, and for the delight of all, I’ll stick my trivia column in right about here. Enjoy!

    DID YOU KNOW…?
Was John Wayne originally offered the leading role in “Gunsmoke”?
    By Commissioner Wretched
    didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com

And a Happy and Prosperous New Year to you!!!

What do you know … I get to eat a bit of crow to start the year. It turns out I have once again made an error in a previous column.

An astute reader wrote in and told me that I was incorrect about the “G” on the helmets of the Green Bay Packers. It does, indeed, stand for “Green Bay,” not for “Greatness” as I had indicated. Whether the Packers are actually great or not, I leave to others to decide, as I am really not much of a football fan.

I do appreciate it when readers let me know of the goofs in the column. If you find one, let me know at didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com and I’ll correct it.

Now, on to the first trivia of 2022!

    Did you know …

… sharks do not like to eat humans? Most sharks are rather particular about what they eat, and most of the time, humans are not on their preferred menu. (For some reason, I am not totally comforted by that fact.)

… your dog may have flews? Before you go running out to buy a flew collar, you should know that it’s natural in some dogs. The flews are the loose, hanging parts of the upper lips of certain breeds of dogs such as bloodhounds. (My dog has flews …)

… three national leaders in World War I were related to each other? British King George V (1865-1936), Russian Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918), and German Kaiser Wilhelm II (1859-1941) were all first cousins. Their common ancestor was their grandmother, Queen Victoria of England (1819-1901). Additional trivia note: Despite the family relations, George and Nicholas were on one side in the war, and Wilhelm was on the other. And when Nicholas was imprisoned by the Bolsheviks following the 1918 Russian Revolution, George was unwilling – for political reasons – to provide a safe haven for him. As a result, the Bolsheviks executed Nicholas and his family. (Victoria would not have been amused.)

… you could be a sufferer of athazagoraphobia? Well, it’s possible, anyway. Athazagoraphobia is the fear of forgetting someone or something, and it also applies to the fear of being forgotten. (How could I forget? How do you pronounce that, anyway? I forgot.)

… an annual marathon has “water stops” that make it worth running? The Marathon du Medoc, which happens each September in the wine country of France, has stations along the route where runners can enjoy oysters, foie gras, steak, wine, cheese and even ice cream before going on with their run. Many of the runners even wear silly costumes for the race. (Book me for the next one! I’ll skip the running and just enjoy the water stops.)

… an iconic television role may have been offered to a popular movie cowboy actor? In 1954, when the popular radio western drama “Gunsmoke” was being prepared to be brought to television, the producers initially considered offering the lead role of Marshal Matt Dillon to movie star John Wayne (1907-1979), but Wayne did not want to be tied to a television series. He recommended instead actor James Arness (1923-2011), who won the role and played Dillon for 20 years on the series and later in five made-for-TV movies. Other sources dispute Wayne being offered the role, but all sources agree Wayne championed Arness to get the part. Wayne did, however, film an introduction for the pilot episode, in which he said he wished he was playing the role. Additional trivia note: One actor not considered for the Dillon role was the man who voiced him for nine years in the radio series, William Conrad (1920-1994). Though all sources agree that Conrad was an excellent actor, the producers felt his physical appearance – he was a rather stocky fellow with a dark mustache – was not the image they had in mind for Matt Dillon.

… some people had ingenious ways to avoid Prohibition? Between 1920 and 1933, when alcoholic beverages were against the law, solid blocks of grape concentrate were sold with the stated intention of allowing people to make grape juice. But the concentrate also had this warning on it: “After dissolving the brick in a gallon of water, do not place the liquid in a jug away in the cupboard for twenty days, because then it would turn into wine.” (Guess what people did?)

… a technology executive once bought a car for a secretary? In the early 1980s, a secretary at Apple Computers was late for work, and company founder Steve Jobs (1955-2011) wanted to know why. The secretary, a single mother, explained that her car would not start. At the end of the day, Jobs tossed the secretary a set of keys to a brand new Jaguar, saying, “Here. Don’t be late any more.”

… jellyfish do not have brains? (Spineless, brainless little jellyfish!)

… no wild tigers exist in Africa? All of the world’s wild tigers are found in Asia. (If you want lions, you go to Africa.)

… avocados are not vegetables? They are technically a single-seeded berry, making them fruit. (So that means guacamole is fruit salad!)

… the nation of Chile did not legalize divorce until 2004? It was the last country in the Western Hemisphere to do so.

    … Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup™ is vegan? So are Ritz Crackers™, Oreos™, and DumDums™.

… women blink nearly twice as much as men? (And they do it so well!)

… catgut does not come from cats? Used to make strings for tennis rackets and musical instruments, catgut actually comes from the intestines of sheep. (I suppose calling it “sheepgut” wasn’t a strong selling point.)

… if you spent a dollar a second, you would need 31.7 years to spend a billion dollars? (Not if you work for the government!)

    Now … you know!

    1. “William Conrad (1920-1994)”

He developed a pretty good waddle after he got fat.
Almost as good as Broderick Crawford of Highway Patrol.

      1. William Conrad was the Voice Over for “The Rocky and Bullwinkle” Show.

A ninja family member was in a college play with Broderick Crawford…and remembered him from Highway Patrol.

        We Are Showing Our Ages.

      2. Conrad eventually got his own series, Cannon.

Early ’80s Jag and he thought she’d be on time? She was just gonna spend more to be late!

        1. I remember Conrad as the narrator of “Wild, Wild World of Animals” on PBS. I also remember him playing a bad guy on an episode of “Have Gun, Will Travel.”

        2. Conrad starred a Marshal Dillon in the “Gunsmoke” radio program throughout the 1950’s. He wanted the TV show gig, but lost the role because of his physical appearance. He was a little too short and portly for the TV role. He also did many hundreds of other radio show roles. Conrad likely earned more money from his radio performances than those TV ones.

    2. I always enjoy these. Mucho thanks!! About that last point, the US ‘national’ Debt hit ~$29T on 17 DEC 21, as of right meow its $29.7T…

It’ll hit $1T/month. Ruminate on that for a bit.

You wrote “jellyfish do not have brains? (Spineless, brainless little jellyfish!)”

      Am CRUSHED, I tell you.

      CRUSHED.

I thought the Scarecrow of Wizard of Oz lacked a brain…

      And Joe Biden…

      Ok. Am gonna say it.

I asked someone the other day as to WHY folks who shove VEGAN down my throats look as if they need to loose a BIG bit of weight..i.e. they are Heavy Set…

      And now I know.

      I just dont get it.

Look at the ingrdients in those items…

*Sigh* If you are Vegan, what exactly do you out Hershey Chocolate Syrup on?

      Vegetables?

      Ritz Crackers? Yeah…all those starches…

      Oreos? Sugar and Starch.

      Dum-Dums? Sugar…

      I just dont get it!!

Obesity KILLS…So does high blood sugar…

  2. Whoever swapped my blue pill out with a fake pill stiffed me out of a stiffie.

    1. Don’t worry Commissar, you can prolly rub one out with only a semi-rigid member if you really work it.

        1. Agreed. Waste of a Taylorcraft BC12-D. As a 15 year old I worked at our local airport pumping gas for flight lessons, mostly in a BC12-D. As a side note, as an elementary school student my first flight was in a Ford Trimotor built in 1929… this one:
          https://977wmoi.com/2020/11/the-tin-goose/
I checked the FAA registration number and the Tin Goose is now flying out of Sonoma, CA.

          1. Ford Tri-Motor, now there’s an elegant aircraft. There’s an airworthy one near me, but I’ve yet to see it fly.

  3. Next Monday night will be the KoB family versus the ninja family…

    ROLL TIDE ROLL!!

No cable, won’t be able to watch. May be best that way. Thanks ESPN /s/! All about the money these days.

                    1. Maybe radio, simu-casts are slim for big games. $$$$ I’ve tried that inherwebz streaming, try for free thing in the past…no joy there. Even with the good web connect I have it buffers and the pop up, sign up now with your credit card blanks the screen. I absolutely refuse to pay for Tee Vee that has ads, my antenna gives me 30+ channels for free, like Tee Vee was meant to be. I told folks waaaay back yonder when the whole satellite tv thing started that one day, you’d have to have a pay channel to see premium sports. And here we are 40 years later. Won’t be long before it’ll be pay per view.

I may just be in my sweat lodge, burning sage and chanting.

                      gabn/rtr/hbtd 😛

            1. Did your phone autocorrect that quote for you? He called her a “soul draining succubus.” A succulent is a plant. Based on my experience, a house plant isn’t capable of soul draining.

              1. Laptop Counselor, with all kinds of auto corrupt thingies. It will sometimes change things even after I proof read. Maybe Chromie thought from her video that she was succulent, not being able to see the demon bitch thru her cray cray eyes. And yes, I had a succulent female that planted herself in my house that was soul draining. Best divorce EVAH! (Cue up The WHO…I’m Free!)

Just goes to show that sometimes, no matter how sweet, sexy, and alluring you Hope she may be, some body, some where is hoping she’ll just leave them alone. (or they are tired of her sh*t)

        1. Love it when they eat their own.
Navy had to win ONE game this year. By four points.

  4. Interesting…

“Army Overturns Reprimand For Officer Who Attended BLM Protests”

    https://www.armytimes.com/news/your-army/2022/01/06/army-overturns-reprimand-for-officer-who-attended-blm-protests-sued-command/

“An Army review board has overturned and destroyed a reprimand that a former Colorado Army National Guard lawyer received from his state’s leadership after he wrote an opinion article criticizing his leaders for investigating his participation in a May 2020 Black Lives Matter protest, according to documents obtained by Army Times.”

    1. “The investigator found that Kennedy did not violate any regulations, save for a minor technical issue about the disclaimer in his article. He also said that there was no way Kennedy could have known violence would occur.”
“During the first investigation, Kennedy wrote another opinion article, “Why is the National Guard investigating peaceful protests?””
“Police teargassed the crowd, and Kennedy wrote an opinion article about his experience.”

      “Protest”?

There is an incongruity there. And I’m old enough to remember if you interfere during an investigation that was a fking crime, but Ive got a soul, so not a lawer (sic).

      1. Also: Burn, Loot, Murder riot = fair play, keep your career even when you use a public forum to put political pressure on your investigation, using your own fking name.

Anywhere else you congregate, if not >75% attended by people with pronouns in their profiles and not a rainbow flag to be seen, straight to the MFing gallows with you.

  5. Phony Update –
Phony Bronze Star Phony 2 Purple Hearts Phony shot in the chest
    Boy Scout leader Thomas Cole…

Well, GoFundMe has shut down his troop trailer fundraiser.
You know, the fundraiser which originally had the
    Purple Heart Combat Wounded ballcap,
and after MP and VG articles,
soon changed to a Gettysburg Battlefield field trip photo.

But he was wearing a Purple Heart cap in Gettysburg, too….
as seen on both MP & VG.

Based on this messaging by GoFundMe,
not sure if he can pull out the funds… or if he threw it all away.

    1. The British armed forces only believe in courts martial of flag officers every couple hundred years. Last year a retired British army 2 star was convicted of fraud by court martial & dismissed. He was stripped of rank, and all retirement benefits. The last prior court martial of a British general/admiral/air marshal was during the Napoleonic Wars.

    https://www.foxnews.com/us/ahmaud-arbery-case-georgia-men-sentenced-in-2020-murder-of-unarmed-black-man

“Glynn County Superior Judge Timothy Walmsley handed down the following sentences:”

“Travis McMichael – Life in prison without parole plus 20 years”

“Greg McMichael – Life in prison without parole plus 20 years”

“William “Roddie” Bryan – Life in prison with the possibility of parole”

    1. McMichaels had it coming but Bryan really got screwed, should have gotten a traffic citation or maybe some sort of road rage derivative.

Arbery was bad news, everywhere he went, even in Hell, he won’t do well.

    2. The graduation/yearbook photo on the headline tells it all, I did not expect more current booking photo.

  7. For those wondering on the absence of The Other Whitey, we’ve now been in contact with him. He’s doing well and taking a break from TaH. I’ve relayed that you all were concerned and noticed his absence.

    From TOW;

If it should come up, please give my best to Poe, Fyr, ExPH2, Hondo, KoB, Dave Hardin, Sparks, AW1Ed, Jeff LPH-3, Slow Joe, LC, and all the rest. There’s no hard feelings towards any of you guys on my end. I’ll still be here on Deviant Art in the unlikely event anyone is looking for me.

Check his work out over on DeviantArt if you haven’t. Channel is YT45. His models are amazing. His latest is the B-29 Super Fortress for his daughter. I’m always impressed at his paint shading. Beautiful work.

    1. Thanks Mason. I stepped over there and checked out the Super Fort. Awesome as all hell.

Now if we could just hear from nobunny….

    2. Thanks for doing that, Mason. It warms Poe’s old, faintly-beating heart to be among those cited by TOW.

Whitey, you are missed and we wish you and your family the best in your escape from Commiefornia…

  8. We All Know THE REAL REASON…

“Biden Will Deliver First State of the Union Address On March 1: It Will Be The Latest Any President Has Made The Address”

    https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-first-state-union-march-1

“President Joe Biden will deliver his first State of the Union address on March 1, the White House confirmed Friday, after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent the president a formal invitation to speak to Congress and the American public one year into his term.”

“It will mark the latest any president has delivered a State of the Union address. The speech is normally timed for January, and occasionally for February. The delay is driven in part by a busy legislative calendar, a winter spike in COVID-19 cases from the more transmissible omicron variant and the upcoming Winter Olympics, which ties up broadcast network time.”

“The last State of the Union address was delivered by then-President Donald Trump on the eve of his acquittal by the Senate in his first impeachment trial.”

    1. ninja,
      Despite the phony delay excuses,
can Biden/Harris fake up some good news in the next 7 weeks??

Actual good news would be wonderful…
… but we see the history here.

      1. MarineDad61:

How much you wanna make a bet that mysteriously, Biden and Fauci will have gotten “rid” of COVID BEFORE 1 March?

You just watch…Those DemoRats are getting DESPARATE…

        1. Wanna also bet that if democrats lose the mid terms, the coof comes back with a vengeance?

You know, before they leave office.

      1. I found this in the Uniparty’s trash can:

‘Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.’

I don’t know what the fuck it means because I’m a pureblooded rube that doesn’t understand things.

  10. And Y’All.

Check out what xyzzy posted..ALL from xyzzy..(see below)

We, the ninja famiky, are now Thyphoid Marys because we don’t believe in Mandatory Vaccinaton…

    xyzzy says:
    January 7, 2022 at 3:54 pm

“Look, what happened at the Federal Capitol was wrong. It wasn’t the American Revolution. More like the Whiskey Rebellion, or the Confederate sedition.”

“We have an obligation to the public good. Vaccine mandates are constitutional; there is 117 years of case law to back that up. I’ve posted a link on that before. You can say that there shouldn’t be a mandate, but the law allows for it. There’s a reason why we have smoking bans; sidestream smoke endangers others’ health. It’s the same way with vaccine mandates; there is no right to be a Typhoid Mary.”

“Now…if you want to change things, you have that right; we all do. However, hysterical claims of upcoming tyranny because you have to wear a mask at Wal-Mart are not the way to do it. Comparing vaccine mandates to the Holocaust are profoundly offensive and put people off you. I’m guessing most of you protested seat belt mandates back in the 1980s, right? Or airport security rules that were created after 9/11?”

“Here, lemme tell you a story about a country. See if you can guess which one. No, I won’t give it to you…really guess, m’kay? In this country the media is heavily censored; all industry is nationalized; necessities are rationed; carpools are mandatory to drive anywhere, and you can’t buy a new car. Give up? I just described the United States in the year 1943. We put up with this sacrifice as it was necessary to preserve our Nation. Those restrictions were repealed at war’s end. It’ll be the same way with vaccine mandates – they’ll be lifted when no longer needed.”

“As for me, I’m going shopping tomorrow…fully vaccinated and masked, of course.”

    1. MuH PoLiO ShOts!!!!! (real, not imagined ‘pandemic’, with a vaccine that was one, provided for for free. stuff with the ‘but this one’ argumentation)

mUh SuPrEmE cOuRt PrEcIdEnT!!!! (Dred Scott)

WaR rAtIoNiNg (you REALLY wanna go down THAT road? Congo-ress hasn’t gotten off their lazy asses to declare war in my lifetime. You get them to do that, I’m game. And not this half-assed war THEY have declared on MY PEOPLE)

The fed gov has zero legitimacy. Prove me wrong.

    2. Industry was not Nationalized during WWII, the production was regulated by the War Production Board for many things, American Industry stayed in private ownership.
AS TO the vaxx and mask mandates along with the other shit, I don’t think so, the ones mandating that shit are obsessed with seeing just how much control and manipulation they can inflict on as many people as they can. The US Army spent plenty of time and money training me on Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Warfare Training to make me believe that a shitty little piece of cloth across my nose and mouth will prevent me from catching a virus, that’s like putting up a chainlink fence to keep mosquitoes out of the yard, viral particles will pass through that like a fart past one’s underwear!

      1. I had that same training so I could serve as my unit’s CBR officer. As you noted, the cloth masks are as effective as your BVD’s are in containing a fart. The surgical paper masks were designed to prevent the OR staff from sneezing into the surgical field on a patient who is undergoing an operation. The N95 masks IMHO will not completely block the viral particles either.

  11. Read this week that Gen MAttis lost 85 million in his theranos investment.
    EIGHTY FIVE MILLION DOLLARS

      1. A recent daily mail article had the 85 million figure, but I checked and another had your figure. I should have double checked first.

    1. gitarcarver:

      Thank You for shaing.

We had a family member serve 25 years on a Police Force mixed with 20 years of National Guard.

5 years after he retired, he took his own life.

To this day, we still do not have a clue as to why he did committed suicide.

Mental Illness IS A DISEASE. Sadly, there is still a Stigma on that disease that folks refuse treatment.

Our hearts go out to those Police Officer’s family.

      So Sad.

    2. That’s truly tragic! One can only guess at the demons plaguing them to make this seem like the best option.
May God watch over their orphaned son.

    3. Heartbreaking for the families of both deputies and the young son that is left behind.

  12. Present and unaccountable, still FIRST (h/t Roh) in the Hearts and Minds of the grandchildren.

Our local Academy had lots of 5.56 on the shelves, a good selection of 22, 9mm, and 45ACP as well. Found a shelf full of some Ruskie 12ga 00 I’d never seen before.

Picked up a few things here and there, but most of my ammo cans are full and Mrs. GB has this thing about wanting to pay the bills, so…

After a range session with the grandsons I was cleaning the magazine on the SR22 when I didn’t get the base plate in correctly and the polymer spring retainer flew out into the grass somewhere.
They don’t sell replacements. I can get the magazine follower, the spring, or the base plates, but not the little part that is most likely to fly into the 7th dimension.

Now experimenting with bake-able polymer clay. One time in the past when I lost one of these, I made a cast and made some pewter copies. That can happen again if I must.

    Y’all take care!

I’m concerned that the 2022 Chili Feed

by dumping the (c)remains of their dearly departed phony

    2. Well, ain’t that just special as all get-out, instead of bobbing for apples, will they be bobbing for phony PH’s and BSMs?
