“First they came for my Buck knife….”

The Washington Times reports this morning that the Obama Administration, not content to change firearms regulations are looking at expanding the definition of switchblade knives in an effort to restrict access to all knives that can be opened with one hand;

“Boy Scout knives, Swiss Army knives – the most basic of knives can be opened one-handed if you know what you are doing,” said Doug Ritter, executive director of Knife Rights, an advocacy group fighting to defeat the measure.

“The outrage is gaining steam,” he said.

Customs officials dismiss fears that the new language will outlaw ordinary pocket knives, saying the change was issued to clear up conflicting guidelines for border agents about what constitutes an illegal switchblade that cannot be imported into the United States. The rule could be imposed within 30 days if not blocked.

Even Congress is worried about the regulation;

The bipartisan Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus, boasting one of the largest memberships on Capitol Hill, last week sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who oversees CBP, urging her to quash the proposed rule change. The letter was signed by 61 Republican and 18 Democratic lawmakers.

“This classification could render millions of law-abiding knife owners in violation of the law and expose major market retailers, manufacturers, dealers and importers to possible federal felony charges, and could drive domestic manufacturers and importers out of business, potentially costing thousands of jobs,” said caucus member Rep. Robert E. Latta, Ohio Republican.

More of the nanny state trying to protect us from ourselves.

  1. Actually, Jonn, they aren’t trying to protect us from ourselves, they are trying to disarm us so that we can’t protect ourselves from them.

  2. …Mmm… I’m learning shop, gunsmithing, & blacksmithing, wonder if that will get me on a DHS watch list…

    The ‘bammer’s citified, uber-urban upbringing leaves him painfully ignorant of the fact that peeps used to make a lot of tools in home workshops instead of buying stuff from China-mart. The knowledge is still out there & easily obtained.

    I suppose magazines like “The Backwoodsman” and the Foxfire book series are gonna get banned… If you posses the “Poor Man’s James Bond” or anything from Loompanics, Paladin, and Desert Publications, an ATF raid could hit your hacienda.

    Joe/Jill Sixpack, ask yourselves why nanny fears you so much!

  3. JunioAG,

    If you want a really useful reference book, find a copy of the US Army’s 1862 Ordnance Manual. It’s been reprinted (though some time back) and might be available online.

    It contains a wealth of data, from making cartridges, powder and percussion caps, to making paints and lacquers, to fireworks, to testing iron and steel, tables of penetration, sine, cosine and tangent tables, how to make packing boxes, working with leather and rope, etc.

    Quite a handy book, and one which is on my bug-out list.

    respects,

  4. Advice taken!

    “Quite a handy book, and one which is on my bug-out list.”

    Bug-out? You don’t listen to Jack Spirko’s “The Survival Podcast” do you?

  5. I blame the Swiss for their evil and useful pocket knives. That and the Boy Scouts, they’re probably using them right now…doing good and all that…subversive Boy Scouts!

  6. And America at large is too wussified to make a concerted effort against this yet another infringement on our rights. The Sheeple didn’t hear the Messiah who, when on the campaign trail stated: “…….I will free us from the constraints of the constitution…..”. The only person who would benefit from “freeing us from the constraints……., would be a politician; the very person those “constraints” are meant to constrain. The people are not constrained by our constitution, but rather are protected and freed by it.
    Sorry assed liberals who think that this “Community Organizer” has any interest at all in improving our way of life.
    Take my knife(s)? Try it, Barry.
