Update on the Polish bomb defusal – Ka-BOOOM

I talked about this story yesterday. The plan was to have the bomb defused by the end of the week. Either the bomb or the technicians thought it could be done way faster. Luckily nobody was hurt.

The biggest World War Two bomb ever found in Poland exploded under water on Tuesday as navy divers tried to defuse it.

More than 750 people had been evacuated from the area near the Piast Canal outside the town of Swinoujscie where the Tallboy bomb used by Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) was found. It weighed nearly 5,400 kg, including 2,400 kg of explosive.

“The deflagration process turned into detonation. The object can be considered as neutralised, it will not pose any more threat,” Second-Lieutenant Grzegorz Lewandowski, the spokesman of the 8th Coastal Defense Flotilla, was quoted as saying by state-run news agency PAP.

“All mine divers were outside the danger zone.”

I love the line, “The deflagration process turned into detonation. The object can be considered as neutralised.” Don’t ever change, Lieutenant.

    1. Very symetrical. Is the charge directed downward?
I would like to see photos of the crater on the riverbed.
      Glad nobody hurt.

  1. I have read that the flagration process could cause quite an eruption…or something. It appears that it created quite a wet spot too.

  2. Now back in the 1950’s that would have been a Blast. Looks like they couldn’t burn off all of the bombs product before it exploded so the operation really bombed out.

  3. That KA-BOOM! is quite impressive, even if it took 80-some years to happen.

Glad that no one got hurt and no buildings were damaged in the explosion.

  4. Sounds pretty controlled… no divers in the (considerable) danger zone, no problems. Not an ‘ah shit’ moment.

  5. “Where’s the KA-BOOM? There should have been an earth shattering KA-BOOM!”
    Marvin, ya got yer wish.

  6. Second-Lieutenant Grzegorz Lewandowski.

    I like this guy.

    Promote immediately ahead of peers.

  7. Given a choice between defusing and removing or CAREFULLY placing a block of C4 on it and detonating it, no brainer.

    1. One look at how long it’s been there says that it could easily have become way too unstable to safely move, thus making detonation the safest and easiest move!

    2. That was my thought too when I read the initial article. Only thing I can think is they expected the blast of doing so to be damaging.

  8. So, the bomb squad figured out that they didn’t have enough fish for Fridays fish fry and decided to go fishing.

  9. Reminds me of a video where a depth charge was detonated. Not as big as this one, but impressive nonetheless.

  10. Polish EOD, “Fuck it, I’m cold and it’s getting late and I’m hungry. Who’s fucking great idea was to try to “fix” this thing??? Shit, gimmie the C4……annnnnnnnnnndddddd

    FULL SEND!!!”
