President Donald Trump awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on Monday to two California Army National Guard aircrews who flew repeatedly into a raging wildfire in two separate endeavors to rescue hundreds of trapped campers — despite being warned repeatedly to abort due to the danger.

“Today, it’s my profound honor to award seven extraordinary soldiers with the Distinguished Flying Crosses for their remarkable courage to rescue their fellow citizens,” Trump said.

The ceremony honored the actions of two crews from the 40th Combat Aviation Brigade: UH-6-M Black Hawk pilot-in-command Kipp Goding, pilot Chief Warrant Officer 2 Irvin Hernandez and crew chief Warrant Officer 1 Ge Xiong received medals, as well as CH-47F Chinook pilot-in-command Chief Warrant Officer 5 Joseph Rosamond, pilot Chief Warrant Officer 2 Brady Hlebain, and flight engineers Sgt. George Esquivel and Sgt. Cameron Powell.

  2. Excellent. This is how it should be done. No waiting months or years to reward exceptional service.

    I’m also glad he gave them all DFCs. SOP on these type of things is for the Pilot in Command to get a DFC and everyone else an Air Medal. They all took the risk knowing the dangers.
