I always thought you had to be shot at to get a Bronze Star, V for specific event, M for long term exceptional duty while down range. Maybe she was, but her certificate doesn’t seem to indicate being under such fire. National Guard political officers and senior EM folk are a real trip sometimes. I know of a Kansas NG colonel who got a Bronze Star for the duty he performed at a Missouri air base during the Kosovo event. There is a decoration called Legion of Merit thatperhaps should have been considered if there was no in-coming. Modern wars don’t seem to march to the beat of the standards that were in place during the Nation’s last major war, Vietnam.

Rick. Some clarification on awards. BSM with V device, you are correct, there has to be risk of imminent harm. Her’s is not with V, so no issue. The BSM is a standard award given to most senior enlisted and officers, it is the equivalent of a Meritorious Service Medal, which, up until recently, could not be awarded in theater. The Legion of Merit is a very high award and is typically given at retirement to recognize a life of dedication.
I am very curious as to your background since your comments are off the wall. What does, “National Guard political officers and senior EM folk,” mean? As for your disparaging comment, Vietnam was our last “major” war, I suspect you have not served in the GWOT. You can talk to the thousands of family members mourning the loss of their loved ones, ask them how they feel about GWOT. All of our wars are hell, all are major, all should be honored.
