Iranian media reports that the support ship Konarak was hit by a new anti-ship missile being test fired by the frigate Jamaran during an exercise on Sunday.<\/p>\n
The Konarak was placing targets in the water and strayed too close to one, and was struck by the missile.<\/p>\n
The navy reported the ship was towed ashore and that an investigation had begun.<\/p>\n
The incident took place near the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes.<\/p>\n
By: RYAN MORGAN<\/strong><\/p>\n At least 19 Iranian Navy personnel are dead and 15 more injured after the warship \u201cKonarak\u201d was struck by Iran\u2019s own missile near Jask Port in southern Iran.<\/p>\n Iran\u2019s official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) confirmed the 19 deaths and 15 injuries in a report Monday.<\/p>\n IRNA revised the casualty toll after it initially reported 16 personnel had been hospitalized with injuries following the accident, including one person who later died, three who were soon released, and 12 who remain hospitalized.<\/p>\n The IRNA reports noted the accident occurred during a training exercise, but did not mention any friendly fire accident.<\/p>\n \u201cExpert investigations are underway about the cause of the incident,\u201d the IRNA reported, asking everyone to avoid raising speculations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Completely avoidable and another example of how professional the Iranians are with missiles.
