Isn’t that just darn sweet of him? And it really isn’t money: it’s credit, in the form of checks or ETFs directly to your bank account. I know these political animals can find ways of not paying taxes, but that should be stopped, period.

I think they should just go right ahead and put this bill through and get people back to spending wildly, exercising their spendthrift genes. My cupboards are full, the pantry is stocked, the freezer’s full and the fridge is loaded for bear, so I’d have to make a spendthrift list to use. I even have a (barely) adequate supply of ice cream. I could get an extra freezer, if need be. But generally speaking, if it’s Bernie’s beneficence behind this, I’m completely in favor of it as long as he’s coughing up the cash and taxes to support it.

There’s a reason for my support of this novel idea: aside from those moments when the ruling Sirdars or Emperors or Caesars rode through the mobs and tossed coins to them to create good will, a couple of financial analysts have acknowledged this current recession – which was created out of whole cloth – but have also forecast that there will be another recession in 2021-2022, which means that starting this program ASAP to support people who are having a rough time will have “trickle down” benefits. One payment has barely helped out people who were in Dire Straits. If another cash boost will get them through the possibility of more rough times ahead, then those 28 millions* who are currently out of work might see a light in the tunnel, never mind at the end of it. *Last week’s numbers; it will likely change soon.

Remember, the Great Depression started with a markets crash that was the result of speculative exuberance, and it took until after the end of World War II for the economy to truly recover and start to grow again. The government wasn’t broke. The general populace was indigent. Jobs disappeared. Banks closed, not because they were frightened by crowds, but because the Fed couldn’t get cash to them quickly enough. Roosevelt’s response was to create the work programs WPA, PWA and CCC. Those government work programs put cash back in people’s pockets, and part of it was sent home to their families. He’s also the Big Guy who started the Social Security program. (It was LBJ who started Medicare.)

There is nothing that says this can’t happen again – all of it – the difference between now and back then being that the recent CARES deposits from the IRS funding were credits rather than cash. You can withdraw cash or pay for things with your bank card. We now have a population of 28 millions out of work through no fault of their own, which numbers may possibly grow, in a forced recession. And people in the know are telling us it can and may happen again, without the forcing next time. When the economy does pick up, a great percentage of jobs in small businesses may be gone permanently because those businesses had to close.

So, go ahead: bring it, guys!!! Let us paysans have some cake to eat!!! Toss a few more coins our way. There is nothing quite as convincing that things are A-OK as having some cash in the cash drawer, or in Mason jars stuffed with coins and bills, buried somewhere in the back yard….

An extension of the CARES bill, which gave us the stimulus checks, or a new bill … Could we have some more, Sir?Read more

[220,213

post-99552","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-the-floggings-will-continue-until-morale-improves","category-your-tax-dollars-at-work
["GET
