Meat production is down at processing plants. We know that. Tyson is having to euthanize hogs because too many plant workers are out of the work line and Smithfield is in the same boat as Tyson. It isn\u2019t just pork: it\u2019s beef and chicken, too.<\/p>\n
From the article: The day after the president signed the order, JBS USA announced it would partially reopen its pork production facility in Worthington, Minnesota \u2014 but only to euthanize hogs that won\u2019t be processed because of bottlenecks in the supply chain.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile our focus is on getting the Worthington facility back to work on behalf of our team members producing food for the nation, we believe we have a responsibility to step up when our producer partners are in need,\u201d Bob Krebs, President of JBS USA Pork, said in a statement. \u201cNone of us want to euthanize hogs, but our producers are facing a terrible, unprecedented situation.\u201d<\/p>\n
The National Pork Producers Council also praised the order but acknowledged that hogs will still go to waste.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile getting pork packing plants back online is foundational, the tragic reality is that millions of hogs can\u2019t enter the food supply,\u201d the council said in a statement, adding \u201cwe need coordinated partnership between the industry and federal, state and local authorities to euthanize pigs.\u201d<\/p>\n
