(twitter.com/hashtag/nnevvy)

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and Chinese “nationalists” were reminded recently that a global audience is different from their domestic one. In China, when the CCP pushes a narrative, arguing against it is risky. Dissenting posts get deleted, accounts get deleted, people get detained, etc.

So, CCP propaganda meets little to no open resistance within China. The CCP can propagandize at will. With restricted speech, Chinese citizens are not always “raked over the coals” like Westerners are… Denying most the opportunity to learn and improve on their geopolitical arguments.

In one instance, a group of Chinese netizens, potentially working for the CCP, engaged in a meme war against Thai memers. A popular Thia show’s actor made the mistake of liking a tweet mentioning Hongkong as a country.

Chinese “nationalist” citizens jumped over China’s firewall and attacked the actor. He apologized. They dug up more dirt on him.

However, his girlfriend made a post in the past, or liked one, referencing Taiwan as separate from China. A twitter hashtag movement began and the CCP trolls attacked her mercilessly. Big mistake.

The actor’s Thai fans jumped in and waged an all-out meme war against the CCP trolls. Result? The Chinese got lacerated. You could tell, by looking at the memes that the Thai members generated, that they were influenced by their Western counterparts. They had the assistance of others from Southeast Asia and even from the West.

The Chinese trolls eventually backed down. Then, other groups of Chinese netizens came out and tried to smooth things over. Like Western leftists, it appears that communists can’t meme. CNN posted about this here.

Propaganda fail: The Philippines

The Chinese Ambassador to Manila posted a video on YouTube. The ambassador’s intent was to show solidarity and unity between the Chinese and the Filipinos. Unfortunately, the video creators did not study the intended audience.

One theme in the video is that China and the Philippines are united by the sea. “One Sea”. They may be separated by land, but they are connected by the sea. Unfortunately, this reminded the Filipinos of China’s maritime claims that violated Filipino sovereignty.

So, instead of seeing the “unity” theme that the Chinese Ambassador attempted to portray, the Filipinos saw it as China reasserting its claim to the entire South China Sea. The video got downvoted by the majority that voted. If you read the comments section, the CCP gets hammered.

An explanation, in English, shows up towards the end of the video. You could tell that it fails as an information campaign. The explanation is an attempt to play China up as a “hero”.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and Chinese “nationalists” were reminded recently that a global audience is … Overseas Chinese Propaganda FailsRead more

[296

post-98896","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-china
["GET
