While some crimes &#8212; including felony assault and rape &#8212; have declined, murder has increased, as did burglary and grand larceny auto, according to the department.<\/p>\n<p>In the first quarter of 2020, from January through March, murders increased by just under 6 percent in comparison to 2019, with the NYPD reporting 92 murders up from 87 during the first quarter last year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While the total is small when compared with Chicago and Baltimore, the rate increase is troubling, and likely the result of too many people too close together, for too long.
