And it\u2019s a virtual certainty that there won\u2019t be a revival.  The drummer and primary lyricist for the band, Neal Elwood Peart, died of cancer earlier this year; if I recall correctly, that fact was noted in comments to a recent Weekend Open Thread.  <\/p>\n<p>I had the chance to listen to some of their music while on the road this past week.  In Peart\u2019s memory, here are two cuts that weren\u2019t released as primary singles (though a live version of one of them was used as a \u201cB\u201d side for a single released in the UK).  Both are over 6 minutes in length; that could well have been the reason neither was released as a primary single.<\/p>\n<p>Both tunes received significant airplay nonetheless.  You might or might not have heard them before, even if you\u2019re not a fan of the band.<\/p>\n<p>IMO they <i>should<\/i> have been singles.  They\u2019re two of the best tunes the band ever did; in my book, they\u2019re <u>the<\/u> two best tunes.  The first is from 1981 album <i>Moving Pictures<\/i>; the second, from 1993\u2019s <i>Counterparts<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/mejBHBexVH4\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/7BTtBrto__U\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FWIW:  while the lyrics of the second tune above \u2013 \u201cAnimate\u201d \u2013 are often thought to be a commentary on male-female relationships from the male perspective (and work quite well from that viewpoint, actually), that appears not to be the case.  Many if not most critics hold that Peart based the song\u2019s lyrics primarily on Jung\u2019s concept of <a href=\" https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anima_and_animus\"><\/i>anima and animus<\/a>.    I\u2019m not sure if Peart ever identified his inspiration for the tune\u2019s lyrics.<\/p>\n<p>RIP, Mr. Peart.  Thanks for the music, and for the memories.
