Eight Republicans broke with their party to join Democratic Senators to pass a bill to curb President Trump’s war powers. The bill heads to the House.<\/p>\n
Since the Senate version had differences from the one that the House considered, these differences have to be reconciled. After it passes the House, it heads to the White House for the expected veto.<\/p>\n
Virginia Senator Tim Kaine wrote the bill. He argued that this was about Congress’s power to declare war. Senator McConnel argued that the bill was very flawed, blunt, and broad. President Trump, knowing that they were considering this, posted a couple of tweets arguing against the proposed bill.<\/p>\n

Tim Kaine, D-Va., who said the resolution was not about Trump or even the presidency, but instead was an important reassertion of congressional power to declare war.<\/p>\n “After years of Congress avoiding its constitutional duty on matters of war, I’m grateful that a bipartisan majority of Senators affirmed that the president cannot send our troops into conflict without authorization<\/span><\/strong>,” Kaine said.<\/p>\n McConnell called the measure “deeply flawed<\/span><\/strong>” in a floor speech Wednesday. “It is too blunt and too broad<\/strong><\/span>,” the Kentucky Republican said.<\/p>\n Trump argued in two tweets Wednesday that a vote against Kaine’s proposal was important for national security and pointed to the Jan. 3 drone strike that killed Iran’s top general, Qassem Soleimani.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Fox News<\/a> and CNN<\/a> have details on this story.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
