Two Army Reservists have been accused of scamming various people according to the website Quartz<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Two members of the US Army Reserve scammed senior citizens, widows, businesses, and a Marine Corps veterans association over the course of nearly two years, according to a\u00a0now-unsealed federal complaint<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Joseph Iorhemba Asan Jr. and Charles Ifeanyi Ogozy joined the Army Reserve in February 2018, and that same month embarked on a \u201cscheme to commit fraud against victims across the United States,\u201d according to the complaint. Prosecutors say the duo amassed up to $3 million.<\/p>\n

The money was stolen through two common online scams: business email compromises, in which they impersonated legitimate company employees to trick them into wiring them hundreds of thousands of dollars, as well as romance scams, in which they \u201cdeluded unsuspecting older women and men into believing they were in a romantic relationship,\u201d ultimately persuading them to send large amounts of money under false pretenses.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

These guys were thinking BIG and not just low-level nickel and dime money.<\/p>\n

The FBI arrested Asan and Ogozy on Oct. 31, 2019. A federal grand jury\u00a0indicted\u00a0Asan on Jan. 30. However, Ogozy was not\u2014and a\u00a0motion filed by prosecutors\u00a0suggests he may in fact be cooperating with investigators.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first one that talks gets the best deal,\u201d former NYPD detective sergeant Joseph Giacalone told Quartz. \u201cWhen you are in the federal system, we\u2019re talking about long sentences and an impetus for others to help themselves out.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

They were buddies in the Army.\u00a0 I wonder if they will be buddies in a federal PMITA prison?<\/p>\n

Apparently, they were boot camp buddies as well.\u00a0 No other active duty listed for them besides these two weeks.<\/p>\n
