The Ukiah Daily Journal reports<\/a> that the Mendocino County sheriff fired a deputy in 2014 for lying while testifying.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although this happened 5 years ago, a new state law makes findings about dishonesty public.<\/p>\n

The Mendocino County sheriff fired a deputy in 2014 for lying on the stand in Superior Court about having been a Marine Corps sniper, documents released under California\u2019s new policing transparency law show.<\/p>\n

The deputy, Jerry Dean Verdot, was testifying about shell casings in an attempted murder trial and was being asked routine questions to establish his knowledge of firearms. It was then that he said, \u201cI was deployed as a sniper in the United States Marine Corps.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Verdot, a detective, hadn\u2019t been a sniper. He\u2019d only been a Marine briefly, after transferring from the Army, and hadn\u2019t finished basic training. What he did have was \u201ca reputation for stretching the truth,\u201d one of his colleagues eventually told investigators, according to documents.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The article’s focus was on the new transparency law in California.<\/p>\n

The law was designed to make dishonesty findings like Verdot\u2019s public, said David Snyder, executive director of the First Amendment Coalition, a pro-transparency group.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a lie under oath,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s the kind of thing the Legislature decided last year should be available to the public.\u201d<\/p>\n

The incident also demonstrates the \u201cstolen valor\u201d phenomenon, or lying about military service or receiving military honors that were never earned, an expert said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
