Man shot to death on Springfield’s north side<\/strong><\/p>\n SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) \u2014 Police say a man turned himself in after the shooting death of a Springfield man.<\/p>\n KY3-TV reports officers responded to a home on the city’s north side around 5 p.m. Monday and found a man who had been shot.<\/p>\n Police say 19-year-old Dearies Hempstead died at a Springfield hospital shortly after the shooting.<\/p>\n Eighteen-year-old Timber Porter, of Springfield, turned himself in to police Tuesday afternoon. He came in the front door. If he was gonna leave, he’d go out that door. And I thought, ‘He’s gonna shoot us when we go down there.” As the robber waited up the landing for the victim’s wife, who uses a wheelchair, to get into the stair chair, he went below.<\/p>\n “And so I just came down, backed up to the wall, you know,” he said.<\/p>\n Right near a shelf is where he kept a shotgun, loaded with bird shot.<\/p>\n “I never fired it. I didn’t even know if it would shoot or not,” he said. “Reached up, brought it down, put it behind my back because it’s a shotgun, you know?”<\/p>\n Moments later, when the would-be bandit entered the room, “so I just came up and shot from the hip.
