The Democrat-dominated House of Representatives formally approved the ground rules for an impeachment inquiry. These rules favor the Democrats’ desires for the inquiry’s direction. This includes potential obstacles to the Republicans.<\/p>\n

Republicans get equal time to ask witnesses some questions. However, if they want to bring additional witnesses in, they have to get approval by their committee chair. On the surface, this may seem like basics. Those in charge of the committees would be expected to have this authority.<\/p>\n

However, a look at this inquiry’s history and its weak argument hints at how specific Republican requests may go. This is based on something that wasn’t a violation. Republicans wanting to thoroughly engage in the process may have a hard time doing so.<\/p>\n

“A yes vote on this resolution today gives a stamp of approval to a process that has been damaged beyond all repair and a blatant and obvious coup to unseat a sitting president of the United States,” Rep. Ross Spano, R-Fla., said.<\/p>\n

Democrats, though, maintained that the president’s own actions — pressing Ukraine to launch politically related investigations, and allegedly using military aid as leverage — brought the country to this point.<\/p>\n

“I do not take any pleasure in the need for this resolution,” Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., said. “We are here because the facts compel us to be here.”<\/p>\n

Showmanship and heated rhetoric marked the lead-up to the vote. Pelosi stood beside a giant placard of an American flag while declaring Congress was “defending our democracy.”<\/p>\n

Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., accused Democrats of being part of a “cult,” suggesting Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., is their leader.<\/p>\n

Trump tweeted after the vote: “The Greatest Witch Hunt In American History!”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The call to the Ukrainian leader appears to be the centerpiece for this effort. Anyone reading the transcript can see that no wrong was done. In fact, what President Trump is accused of doing was actually done by one of the candidates on the Democrat side.<\/p>\n

Nancy Pelosi, when arguing against impeachment for President Clinton, advanced arguments contradicting the ones that she’s making now for the impeachment inquiry. What she said in the impeachment argument in the late 1990s is applicable now. Not when she made the argument back then.<\/p>\n
