Flaherty<\/strong>, US Naval Reserve, assigned to the crew of the <i>USS Oklahoma<\/i>, was lost at Pearl Harbor, HI, on 7 December 1941.  His accounting was announced on 1 November 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>MM1c Paul H. Gebser<\/strong>, US Naval Reserve, assigned to the crew of the <i>USS Oklahoma<\/i>, was lost at Pearl Harbor, HI, on 7 December 1941.  His accounting was announced on 1 November 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Cox Layton Banks<\/strong>, US Navy, assigned to the crew of the <i>USS Oklahoma<\/i>, was lost at Pearl Harbor, HI, on 7 December 1941.  His accounting was announced on 30 Ocober 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>F1c Bethel Walters<\/strong>, US Navy, assigned to the crew of the <i>USS West Virginia<\/i>, was lost at Pearl Harbor, HI, on 7 December 1941.  His accounting was announced on 30 October 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>S2c Lloyd R. Timm<\/strong>, US Navy, assigned to the crew of the <i>USS Oklahoma<\/i>, was lost at Pearl Harbor, HI, on 7 December 1941.  His accounting was announced on 1 November 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>S2c Everett Windle<\/strong>, US Navy, assigned to the crew of the <i>USS Oklahoma<\/i>, was lost at Pearl Harbor, HI, on 7 December 1941.  His accounting was announced on 30 October 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>PVT Porfirio C. Franco<\/strong>, US Army, assigned to 200th Coastal Artillery, was lost in the Philippines on 18 July 1942.  His accounting was announced on 29 October 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Sgt Jerome B. Morris<\/strong>, USMC, assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, was lost on Tarawa on 22 November 1943.  His accounting was announced on 29 October 2019.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>From Korea<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>SFC Phillip C. Mendoza<\/strong>, US Army, assigned to D Battery D, 15th Anti-Aircraft Artillery, 57th Field Artillery Battalion, 31st Regimental Combat Team, was lost in North Korea on 2 December 1950.  He was accounted for on 12 August 2019. (see note)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>SGT William C. Holmes<\/strong>, US Army, assigned to Heavy Tank Company, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, was lost in North Korea on 21 September 1951.  His accounting was announced on 31 October 2019.<\/p>\n<p> <u><strong>From Southeast Asia<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>None<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Welcome back, elder brothers-in-arms.  Our apologies that your return took so long.<\/p>\n<p>Rest easy.  You\u2019re home now.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>. . .<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over 72,000 US personnel remain unaccounted for from World War II; over 7,600 US personnel remain unaccounted for from the Korean War; over 1,500 remain unaccounted for in Southeast Asia (SEA); 126 remain unaccounted for from the Cold War; 5 remain unaccounted for from the Gulf Wars; and 1 individual remains unaccounted for from Operation Eldorado Canyon. Comparison of DNA from recovered remains against DNA from some (but not all) blood relatives can assist in making a positive ID for unidentified remains that have already been recovered, or which may be recovered in the future.<\/p>\n<p>On their web site&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/Contact\/ContactUs.aspx\"><em>Contact Us<\/em><\/a> page DPAA now has FAQs. One of those FAQs describes who can and cannot submit DNA samples useful in identifying recovered remains. The chart giving the answer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/portals\/85\/Images\/DNA.jpg\"><em>can be viewed here<\/em><\/a>. The text associated with the chart is short and is found in one of the FAQs.<\/p>\n<p>If your family lost someone in one of these conflicts and you qualify to submit a DNA sample, please arrange to submit one. By doing that you just might help identify the remains of a US service member who\u2019s been repatriated but not yet been identified \u2013 as well as a relative of yours, however distant. Or you may help to identify remains to be recovered in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Everybody deserves a proper burial. That\u2019s especially true for those who gave their all while serving this nation. <\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><i><u>Author&#8217;s Note<\/u>:  Recently, DPAA changed the heading for one of its column headings on its &#8220;Recently Accounted For&#8221; listing.  Formerly, the column was titled &#8220;Date Accounted For&#8221;; it now is titled &#8220;Date Announced&#8221;.  Dates for existing listings posted as &#8220;Date Accounted For&#8221; were not updated when the change occurred.<\/p>\n<p>SFC Mendoza&#8217;s &#8220;Date Announced&#8221; date currently reads 12 August 2019. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/News-Stories\/News-Releases\/PressReleaseArticleView\/Article\/1937622\/soldier-accounted-for-from-korean-war-mendoza-p\/\"><\/i>this DPAA announcment<i><\/a> announcing SFC Mendoza&#8217;s accounting is dated 21 October 2019.  I am personally convinced that SFC Mendoza was accounted for on 12 August 2019, but that his name was &#8220;slipstreamed&#8221; into DPAA&#8217;s &#8220;Recently Accounted For&#8221; list after the fact sometime between 18 August 2019 and 21 October.<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DPAA has identified and accounted for the following formerly-missing US personnel.
