I constantly get flack for holding my position that civilians should stop giving money to veteran charities.\u00a0 Ya, Ya, Ya,\u00a0 I know there are a few of the over 30,000 registered veteran charities that do some good work.\u00a0 Toys for Tots is probably at the top of that list.<\/p>\n

The tsunami of fraud, waste, and abuse that is going on wipes the pages clean of any do-gooder benefit in my book.\u00a0 Until the trash that runs the majority of those 30,000 charities is clean up and held accountable we should stop supporting them.<\/p>\n

A Litchfield attorney pleaded guilty Wednesday to stealing $1.4 million from the charity he founded to support families of military veterans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Kevin Creed, 67, waived his right to be indicted and pleaded guilty to wire fraud for the scheme in federal court in New Haven, the U.S. attorney’s office announced Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Creed founded the Friends of Fisher House Connecticut in 2010 as a chapter of the national Fisher House Foundation, a nonprofit that builds “comfort homes” on the grounds of military and Veteran Affairs medical centers to provide no-cost accommodations for veterans and their families receiving care there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He actively solicited donations for nonprofit from businesses and individuals, including the Bristol half-marathon and a 10-kilometer race, under the guise that the money would support the West Haven Fisher House, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n

But Creed also took about $1.4 million of the money raised for the group and put it toward personal expenses and expenses for his Bristol-based law firm, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Fisher House sued Creed late last year for the theft and filed to hold him in contempt this summer, unable the group has been unable to recover any of the money even though Creed’s law firm continued to pay him, according to court records. That case is still pending and the next status conference is not scheduled until Oct. 25.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The criminal case is still under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in New Haven and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael McGarry, according to the U.S. attorney\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Creed faces a maximum prison term of 20 years and is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Janet Hall on Nov. 20. He was released on a $100,000 bond pending his sentencing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I figure his law firm will step up to the plate and demand they be able to repay the $1.4 million.\u00a0 That has to be the case because lawyers are driven to do the right thing, it’s in their DNA.\u00a0 (if you need a \/sarc tag added to that…you should probably stay off of this interwebnet thingy.)<\/p>\n

Those numbers do not include all of the “expenses” poor David has to be reimbursed for.\u00a0 It’s just my humble opinion but Creed and Coker come from the same mold.\u00a0 Fisher House is nothing special when it comes to all this parasitic poor veteran behavior.\u00a0 Insofar as I can tell, its epidemic.<\/p>\n

No veteran should have to look at that picture too intently in order to figure out there are a bunch of parasites in it.\u00a0 Using us for political gain is repugnant, particularly if you have embellished your military career to gain public support.<\/p>\n
