The Washington Post<\/a> and other media outlets report<\/a> that Presidential candidate Joe Biden tells a moving and gripping story about his efforts to pin a Silver Star on a U.S. Navy Captain that served in Afghanistan.\u00a0 The Navy Captain refused the medal in compelling, dramatic fashion.<\/p>\n

The only problem is that the story does not appear to be true.<\/p>\n

Joe Biden painted a vivid scene for the 400 people packed into a college meeting hall. A four-star general had asked the then-vice president to travel to Konar province in Afghanistan, a dangerous foray into \u201cgodforsaken country\u201d to recognize the remarkable heroism of a Navy captain.<\/p>\n

Some told him it was too risky, but Biden said he brushed off their concerns.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can lose a vice president,\u201d he said. \u201cWe can\u2019t lose many more of these kids. Not a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Navy captain, Biden recalled Friday night, had rappelled down a 60-foot ravine under fire and retrieved the body of an American comrade, carrying him on his back. Now the general wanted Biden to pin a Silver Star on the American hero who, despite his bravery, felt like a failure.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said, \u2018Sir, I don\u2019t want the damn thing!\u2019 \u201d Biden said, his jaw clenched and his voice rising to a shout.\u00a0 Do not pin it on me, Sir!\u00a0 Please, Sir.\u00a0 Do not do that!\u00a0 He died.\u00a0 He died!\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

BUT…<\/p>\n

The Post found after conducting \u201cinterviews with more than a dozen U.S. troops, their commanders and Biden campaign officials, it appears as though the former vice president has jumbled elements of at least three actual events into one story of bravery, compassion and regret that never happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Biden rejected<\/a> the notion that the story was false.<\/p>\n

Former Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday rebuffed a news report\u00a0that he has recently misrepresented an anecdote on the campaign trail about giving awards for valor to members of the military, possibly conflating three separate real-life events.<\/p>\n

Though Biden said he hadn\u2019t seen the Washington Post article, he told a reporter for the\u00a0The Post and Courier\u00a0after a campaign event in South Carolina that he stood by his retellings of meeting with heroes of the Afghanistan war over the last decade.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Many believe that it doesn’t matter if it’s the truth or not… it plays.<\/p>\n
