Now they\u2019re charged with murder in botched car theft.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Police agencies chased a vehicle from Gurnee into Chicago\u2019s West Town neighborhood early Aug. 13, 2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>By Jim Newton , Angie Leventis Lourgos  and Rosemary Sobol<br \/>\nTeens from Chicago charged with murder after a 14-year-old was shot and killed by a homeowner with a gun told investigators they were in Lake County to commit burglaries and had stolen vehicles in the past, law enforcement officials said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Five Chicago teens, including four juveniles charged as adults, face charges after the fatal shooting at the home of a 75-year-old licensed gun owner who heard people on his property after 1 a.m. Tuesday and thought they were trying to steal his Audi, according to authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Illinois law allows for authorities to charge suspects with murder if someone dies during the commission of another serious crime.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, the teens were charged even though they were not holding the gun because 14-year-old Jaquan Swopes, of Chicago, was killed during the suspected attempted car theft at a home in a remote area between Antioch and Gurnee called Old Mill Creek.<\/p>\n<p>Lake County State\u2019s Attorney Michael Nerheim said Wednesday that the forcible felony laws in Illinois are similar to others across the country and have been upheld by courts nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe felony murder law is in place to discourage people from committing forcible felonies, because if someone dies during the commission of a forcible felony, then it\u2019s first-degree murder,\u201d Nerheim said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>0 \/ 5 \/ 0<br \/>\nHow many called for adult felony murder yesterday? The suspect involved was identified as Daniel M. Roberts, 53 of Paris.<\/p>\n<p>From Paris Police Chief Bob Hundley:<\/p>\n<p>The victim will be identified only as a 78-year-old female at this time. She does have significant injuries; stab wounds, broken leg and a skull fracture, and has been admitted to a local hospital. The victim was able to call 9-1-1.<\/p>\n<p>From the crime scene, it is apparent that the victim fought the suspect.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect was arrested after jumping from a window at the residence and chased down. He was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg and released to arresting officers. He is currently being held in the city jail.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect is identified as a Daniel M. Roberts, 53 of Paris.
