A Tarrant officer found Buchanan&#8217;s patrol vehicle with bullet holes but couldn&#8217;t find him.<\/p>\n<p>He was ultimately located\u00a0uninjured a short distance away near railroad tracks.<\/p>\n<p>Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith said Thursday that an investigation couldn&#8217;t corroborate Buchanan&#8217;s story of events. He was relieved of his duties last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis officer did a lot on that night to present a false image of heroism,&#8221; Smith told reporters during a news conference. &#8220;He endangered the lives of the community by discharging his firearm, and also other officers, as they responded from all over the city to be at his side and do everything that they can to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith said Buchanan&#8217;s actions only helped to tear down the trust built by the police department and the community. He called it a case of &#8220;stolen valor&#8221; and &#8220;stolen honor,&#8221; a reference to those who lie about heroic acts to reap profit or gain accolades.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Several Tarrant Police officers rushed to the scene. They found the car and Buchanan on the ground, &#8220;appearing to be unconscious and holding his gun and moaning from his injuries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It was later reported that at a hospital, the officer was found to have &#8220;no significant injuries,&#8221; according to WVTM.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators scoured the scene for evidence about who fired the shots, collecting video and witness statements.
