The folks at Military Phony<\/a> send us their work on Kenneth Alfred Desautels who claims he was a SEAL in Vietnam by the act of wearing a US Navy SEAL insignia on his finest for Memorial Day 2019.\u00a0 Desautels lives in Leicester, Massachusetts and is 74 years old as of June 2019.<\/p>\n

The Telegram.com carried an article<\/a> on Memorial Day 2019 that featured Desautels.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

As you can see from the above photos that were printed with the article \u2013 Desautels wears a US Navy SEAL insignia, Petty Officer First Class strips (E-6), two (2) service stripes on the sleeves designating eight (8) years of service, a Purple Heart for combat wounded and a Combat Action Ribbon.<\/p>\n

It is important to note that the article does not specifically say \u201cSEAL\u201d or “SEALs” or “UDT” but talks about a “special amphibious unit.”<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been about 50 years since Mr. Desautels left the Navy\u2019s special amphibious forces and began to march in the Memorial Day Parade.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Then later\u2026<\/p>\n

Mr. Desautels joined the Navy in 1960 not long after graduating from Leicester High School. In 1966, after serving as a Navy electrician, Uncle Sam \u201cvolunteered\u201d him to serve in a special amphibious unit.<\/p>\n

After intensive training, Mr. Desautels was sent to work as a diver identifying and removing explosives the Vietnamese would place on American vessels coming to port in Qui Nhon, Vietnam.<\/p>\n

Mr. Desautels spoke of the mission \u2014 given, as he termed it, mainly to \u201cunattached\u201d sailors (he wasn\u2019t married at the time) who were good swimmers \u2014 in a no-frills manner.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a job we were trained to do, and that\u2019s what we did,\u201d he said. The young man from Leicester \u2014 who became good at swimming at Rochdale Pond near his home \u2014 was now trying to find explosives hidden on the hulls of ships 8,500 miles away.<\/p>\n

Mr. Desautels said he was able to find about half a dozen mines, which he and his fellow divers had to then remove so they could be detonated safely.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, the mines were attached to lines that somebody was looking to pull to prompt explosion, he said, making it important to be as discreet and quick as possible.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Desautels posted on a bulletin board<\/a> in regard to his military service with IUWG-2 and claims he was an EM3 (E-4) and Diver:<\/p>\n

Desautels appeared in previous photos with what appears to be fewer medals.\u00a0 The following photo appeared in the newspaper in 2011…<\/p>\n

Keep in mind that Desautels was not on Navy active duty in between these photographs, so he could not have earned more medals, but yet the amount of medals grows in size and prestige.<\/p>\n

Desautels’ official military records were ordered through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request…<\/p>\n

DISCUSSION and SUMMARY<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Ken Desautels has no record of going to BUD\/S and no assignment with a SEAL Team over his career. There is also no listing of a SEAL NEC in his records.<\/p>\n

There is no diver qualification listed in his records.<\/p>\n

His service with Inshore Undersea Warfare Group TWO (IUWG-2), Little Creek, Virginia may be what he referred to as a special amphibious unit, but that’s not the SEALs.<\/p>\n

The summary sheet shows that he got out as a Electrician\u2019s Mate Fireman [EMFN] (E-3) vs. the E-6 that he claims by his rank inginia.<\/p>\n

He has six years service but some of that may be Reserve time. He does not show 8 years as would be claimed by two service stripes on his uniform. Perhaps this was in order for the E-6 claim to be less odd?<\/p>\n

There is no Purple Heart or Combat Action Ribbon in his official military records.<\/p>\n

STOLEN VALOR<\/strong><\/p>\n

If the claims by Kenneth Desautels were used to leverage work, military or civilian promotions, or anything else of value, Desautels may be in violation of Stolen Valor laws. State laws may also apply.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Just to clear up any confusion for the nice people of Leicester, Massachusetts – Ken Desautels was NOT a Navy SEAL.\u00a0 \u00a0He was also not an E-6 and was not awarded a Purple Heart.<\/p>\n
