The Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard are working to define their\u00a0new roles in the Arctic,<\/a>\u00a0but a few new icebreakers won\u2019t solve their lagging capabilities to project power and deter rivals in the region, experts from the Naval War College said at a panel Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n By 2020, Russia is expected to have full radar coverage,\u00a0S-400 air defense\u00a0<\/a>and anti-surface missile coverage, a fully operational communication network and an underwater surveillance system bridging the over 1,600 miles from the Bering Strait to the Bering Sea, right off Alaska\u2019s coast, a professor at the Naval War College and former chief of the Norwegian Navy said at the panel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cYou need to start looking at the Arctic as it is, not what you want it to be,\u201d said retired Norwegian Rear Adm. There is a lot of parading going on with Russia off the coast of Norway, among other things.<\/p>\n Our puddle pounders may be fine with winter chores such as clearing shipping lanes, but this is much more than that and they know it, and they’ll have the Navy and Marines in their company, too.<\/p>\n If Putin is not moving to acquire control of the Arctic itself, then what else is it?\u00a0 \u00a0That’s a vast area for oil and gas exploration and development as well as shipping, and he knows it quite well.\u00a0 He seems to be on a roll here.
