A well-organized coalition of special interests is advocating for a higher tax on the rich and made its presence known during the meeting.

So Patterson backed off on his proposal to tax every step New Yorkers take;

Instead, Paterson plans to use federal stimulus money to close gaps in the state budget. The governor said he intends to use $1.3 billion in Medicaid, education and flexible funding from Washington to replace revenue the taxes would have generated.

While that’s good news for residents, there is a catch: Dozens of new or increased taxes – including those on beer and wine, car registrations, driver’s licenses and fishing – remain part of Paterson’s budget proposal. His original executive budget recommended a total of $4.1 billion in increased taxes and fees; about one-third were eliminated Wednesday.

He wants to increase the tax on beer by more than 100%. Blasphemy. Even the Soviets didn’t tax vodka. Despite the fact that he knows that taxation hurts the economy;

“In 2003 … the economy was moving very well. What we learn is wealth is portable. Since they are the job creators, the jobs also leave the state.”

Well, duh, Governor. So why are you going to raise taxes, then. Clown.

Still, Paterson wants to take tens of billions of dollars and invest it in 19th century technology;

With hopes of building a faster rail line stretching across the state, Gov. David Paterson released a plan Monday that will be a cornerstone of New York’s application for federal transportation stimulus funds.

The plan calls for $10.7 billion more in railway funding in New York over the next 20 years, even as the state faces tens of billions of dollars in deficits over the next three years. New York is competing with four other states for a chunk of the $8 billion in federal stimulus funds for rail service available later this year.

Makes sense, huh? Raise taxes to fund a technology that isn’t welcomed in the United States much anymore.
