Bernie Sanders argues that the Constitution gives everybody the right to vote. During a CNN townhall, one of the audience members asked him if he would support franchising people convicted of terrorism, murder, and sexual assault.<\/p>\n

In his response, Bernie Sanders argued that the Constitution says that everybody could vote. He expanded by arguing that we are a “democracy”, and that this “democracy” should be expanded. He talked about a “slippery slope” if these people were to continue not having a right to vote.<\/p>\n

“But, I think the right to vote is inherent to our democracy. Yes, even for terrible people, because once you start chipping away and you say, ‘That guy committed a terrible crime, not gonna let him vote. Well, that person did that. Not gonna let that person vote,’ you’re running down a slippery slope. So, I believe that people who commit crimes, they pay the price. When they get out of jail, I believe they certainly should have the right the vote, but I do believe that even if they are in jail, they’re paying their price to society, but that should not take away their inherent American right to participate in our democracy.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If you check the text of the Constitution, it doesn’t clearly state that “everybody should be able to vote”. In fact, it does acknowledge that certain people wouldn’t have that right. It mentions “crime” as one of the groups of people that would not be able to vote.<\/p>\n

Where was this “slippery slope” argument on his stance on weapons? He voted<\/a> in favor of banning assault weapons, in favor of expanding background checks, and in favor of banning magazines that could hold more than 10 rounds. One could look at examples of what is happening in the UK to see where this slippery slope could lead.<\/p>\n

What about the slippery slope that could result from providing a path to legalization to the illegal aliens that are already here? Give a pathway to citizenship to those individuals, and you’ll encourage even more illegal aliens to come over… Come here illegally, stick around long enough, and one might benefit from the same consideration.<\/p>\n

But, when it comes to the left, more specifically their “movers and shakers”, they don’t really care about democracy, or about the “little guy”. For those on the left in general, it’s more about getting their way. For those on the left, in positions of power and\/or influence, it’s more about power and control.<\/p>\n

Allowing the felons to vote, while they’re still in jail, increases the numbers for Democrat votes. Pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens that are already here? Additional votes for Democrats.<\/p>\n

Reduce the populations’ weapons capability relative to that of the criminals? With policies that are softer towards crime, and with more crime being committed, more become dependent on the government for both protection and “solutions”. Unfortunately, in this scenario, the “solutions” chip away at our power over the government.<\/p>\n
