The story is currently being carried by ABC 7<\/a> and\u00a0Yahoo Finance<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A single woman was scammed out of $273K by a man posing as a\u00a0U.S. Marine Corps Major on\u00a0Match.com.<\/p>\n

Yin,\u00a0a 56-year-old hairstylist from Oakland, Calif., told\u00a0ABC 7\u00a0that she purchased a $107 six-month membership to Match.com and started talking to \u201cDavid Perez\u201d of San Fransisco, a divorced\u00a0Marine Corps Major\u00a0with a 10-year-old daughter.<\/p>\n

They hadn\u2019t met in person but Yin told\u00a0ABC 7, \u201cI fell in love with him quickly, you know. Like really deeply fall in love with him, trust in everything he said.\u201d<\/p>\n

Five weeks into the online relationship, Perez told\u00a0Yin he was being deployed on a clandestine mission to Afghanistan and he needed money deposited into a Chinese bank account.\u00a0\u201cI know you\u2019re doing everything to help me, but I just want you to try your best,\u201d Perez wrote to Yin, according to\u00a0ABC 7.<\/p>\n

Since most scammers are overseas, primarily in places such as Nigeria or Ghana, they can be hard to catch and prosecute, says Baker, due to challenging extradition processes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
