In an earnings call on March 13, CEO Edward Stack told investors that the sporting goods retailer would stop selling firearms at 125 locations \u2014 roughly 17 percent of its stores in the US. Dick\u2019s will replace these firearm sections with other categories, like shoes and clothes, and will also test experiential retail concepts like in-store batting cages.<\/p>\n

This significant step away from the gun business comes one year after Dick\u2019s took swift action in response to the February 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 students and staff members dead. In a move that sparked both celebration from gun control activists to celebrate and protests from Second Amendment advocates, the company\u00a0stopped selling guns to customers younger than 21<\/a>, and pulled assault rifles and high-capacity magazines from all its Dick\u2019s Sporting Goods Stores as well as from its sub-brand Field & Stream.<\/p>\n

Stack made it clear that he felt his company needed to take a strong stance in America\u2019s heated gun control debate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThoughts and prayers are not enough,\u201d he wrote in a widely shared statement after the Parkland shooting. \u201cWe have to help solve the problem that\u2019s in front of us. Gun violence is an epidemic that\u2019s taking the lives of too many people, including the brightest hope for the future of America \u2014 our kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Stack is gullible and naive.\u00a0 You could probably put all the people who walked into a Dick’s Sporting Goods store and legally bought a firearm and then used that weapon to commit a crime at my dining room table and still have seats available.<\/p>\n

He hired three lobbyists to push for gun control in Congress, and the company also announced it would\u00a0destroy all the weapons it had stopped selling<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While Stack stated clearly that he is a supporter of the Second Amendment and a gun owner himself, the company\u2019s actions angered the gun rights community. The National Rifle Association painted Dick\u2019s as an enemy,\u00a0tweeting<\/a>\u00a0that it was \u201cpunishing law-abiding citizens,\u201d and the National Shooting Sports Foundation revoked the company\u2019s membership.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Stack clearly has an entirely different understanding of the Second Amendment than I do.\u00a0 Putting three people on the payroll to attack it seems to be diametrically opposed to supporting it.<\/p>\n

He claims sales are down 4%, I don’t believe that either.\u00a0 History tells me that the accountants are probably playing games with the numbers to minimize their losses.\u00a0 \u00a0That works for a short period of time.<\/p>\n

\u00a0As it shutters its gun business in 125 underperforming stores, Dick\u2019s will instead focus on other categories, like shoes and fitness wear. Stack didn\u2019t specify which stores will stop selling guns nor which locations will continue to do so (Vox reached out to Dick\u2019s for comment and did not immediately hear back).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

My guess is it is probably more than likely that 25% of its stores are operating in the red at this point.\u00a0 “Underperforming” is usually code for losing money.\u00a0 If they admit 15% are losing money the number is most probably twice that.\u00a0 \u00a0It’s just my humble opinion of course. I doubt even Stack has the real numbers.<\/p>\n

Spend\u00a0money at Dick’s Sporting Goods and you are helping finance the attack on your rights as an American.<\/p>\n

Batting Cages will not put them on the right path.<\/p>\n
