She took the opportunity to slam capitalism, and the inequality that it created.

From Bloomberg:

“Capitalism is an ideology of capital – the most important thing is the concentration of capital and to seek and maximize profit,” Ocasio-Cortez said. And that comes at any cost to people and to the environment, she said, “so to me capitalism is irredeemable.”

She majored in international relations and economics. This should’ve included both micro and macro economics.

You’re going to have supply and demand for products and services. Then, you’re going to have those who are going to meet demand via leveraging the resources available to meet that demand.

There are other factors at play as well. When buyers (demand) pay to get something material or non material that they need or want, and the supplier charges what the market could handle to meet this demand, money is going to funnel to the supplier.

Depending on the profit potential, then the actual profit, the supplier is going to charge a rate that would allow them to cover costs, and then make a profit. Repeat cycle.

This happens across multiple services and industries. In order to meet demand, those producing products and services hire other people to create those products and deliver services.

These individuals aren’t going to make as much as the owner of the company. However, they have the option to increase their worth through experience and education to ask for a pay raise, or to be able to compete for a better paying job.

There are other factors at play that’s not mentioned in this post. However, this isn’t the zero sum game that Alexandria Cortez makes it out to be. Capitalism beats socialism and communism when it comes to reducing poverty and poorness in favor of increasing a person’s net worth.

More from the same article:

“It doesn’t feel good to live in an unequal society,” she said, citing an increase in homelessness in New York City among veterans and the elderly while penthouses sit empty. “It doesn’t feel good to live in a society like that.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is arguing for an “equal opportunity to an equal outcome” arrangement. This also hints at the philosophy, paraphrased, that advocates “from each according to ability, to each according to need.”

With all other things equal, people pretty much have equal opportunity from the beginning. Then from this “starting point”, people make decisions, good, neutral or bad, that leads to specific outcomes. These decisions and outcomes compound, impacting each person’s life.

Naturally, the outcomes for each person is going to be different.

It wouldn’t be surprising if local and state policies contributed to the increase in veteran and elderly homelessness in New York City. Other factors, like the series of decisions made by the homeless, contributed to their being homeless.

More can be read at Bloomberg.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was at an event, in Austin Texas, along with Democratic presidential hopefuls.
