A federal judge in Maryland cleared the way Thursday for the Trump administration to implement broad restrictions on transgender people serving in the military.<\/p>\n

U.S. District Judge George Russell rescinded an earlier order that he had issued to bar the administration from putting its policy in place.<\/p>\n

The case in Maryland was filed days after Trump formally ordered the Pentagon to ban the recruitment of openly transgender people.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I never thought I would miss the days of “Don’t ask…Don’t tell”.<\/p>\n

American Civil Liberties Union lawyer Joshua Block, the lead attorney for the transgender service members in Maryland, said the ruling Thursday does \u201cconcrete, severe harm.\u201d Block called it \u201cparticularly outrageous and irrational\u201d that the government would not accommodate five of his clients who were on the cusp of enlisting or being commissioned as officers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s petty, and it is disappointing when you drill down to the level of real people who are making career plans,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

All those poor people on the cusp of joining are just going to have to act as if they have a pair.<\/p>\n

The Trump policy reverses an Obama administration rule that allowed transgender men and women to enlist and instead bars entry those who identify with a gender different from the one assigned at birth and who are seeking to transition with medical assistance. The Trump administration\u2019s policy also makes exceptions for about 900 transgender individuals who already are serving openly and for others who say they will serve in accordance with their birth gender.<\/p>\n

Russell\u2019s order lifts the preliminary injunction he issued in November 2017. Three other courts \u2013 in California, Washington state and the District of Columbia \u2013 also had issued injunctions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
