According to\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2562566257605950607LPlnk508076\" class=\"m_-2562566257605950607x_OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/ptsd\/suicide-risk-factors-how-find-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/ptsd\/suicide-risk-factors-how-find-support\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1550873210943000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFYSCe5OhhnPfj6l1Z6weHNub5xOQ\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">research<\/a>\u00a0in the journal Depression and Anxiety, 28 percent of those who reported a past traumatic event had attempted suicide. Another study found that those with TBI, which affects about the\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2562566257605950607LPlnk926529\" class=\"m_-2562566257605950607x_OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5501743\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5501743\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1550873210943000&amp;usg=AFQjCNETMSMnHWC3G-pmpFW8cLlFBzS2NA\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">same portion<\/a>\u00a0of veterans, are nearly\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2562566257605950607LPlnk64119\" class=\"m_-2562566257605950607x_OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-headtrauma-suicide\/traumatic-brain-injury-tied-to-increased-risk-of-suicide-idUSKBN1KZ2A2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-headtrauma-suicide\/traumatic-brain-injury-tied-to-increased-risk-of-suicide-idUSKBN1KZ2A2&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1550873210943000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEkM2DB86rqcp_9Dl3Oq-KbY1Fa7w\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">twice<\/a>\u00a0as likely to die by suicide.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;There&#8217;s long been anecdotal evidence that service dogs can help treat these mental health afflictions. Service dogs can be trained to perform countless tasks that mitigate these conditions, including retrieving medication, searching homes for perceived threats, grounding handlers during a stressful episode, aiding with memory-related tasks, and even turning on lights during a night terror.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>One would think that they would have a lot more than just &#8220;anecdotal evidence&#8221; by now.\u00a0 When an organization publishes a study that strongly supports its own cause &#8230; my bullshit meter begins to peg.\u00a0 When other people quote those studies to support more of their own interests, my ass begins to itch.\u00a0 The general purpose for pimping out puppies, in my opinion, boils down to a few things.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Money<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>People like to be seen as helping poor veterans in crisis.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Money<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Most people have a soft spot for pets<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Money<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It requires very little actual education or training to claim you have trained a dog as a PTSD companion.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Did I mention, Money?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p>Unfortunately, waiting lists for veterans in need of service dogs are long. The process is time-consuming and expensive, costing as much as $30,000 per dog. With the VA refusing to endorse service dogs as a PTSD and TBI treatment \u2014\u00a0awaiting the results of\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2562566257605950607LPlnk474558\" class=\"m_-2562566257605950607x_OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.contemporaryclinicaltrials.com\/article\/S1551-7144(17)30076-9\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.contemporaryclinicaltrials.com\/article\/S1551-7144(17)30076-9\/abstract&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1550873210943000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFJuGo6LuAFLAr4IemRDzv6vyNJrA\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">its own in-depth study<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 funding is scarce.<\/p>\n<p>The new Congress should reintroduce and support the\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2562566257605950607LPlnk139230\" class=\"m_-2562566257605950607x_OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/house-bill\/3335\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/house-bill\/3335&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1550873210944000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFTxhD1V_1wF2t08wvRLO4sqbrVUA\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Pups for Patriots Act<\/a>, which would direct the VA to provide more service dogs, trained to national standards developed in part by American Humane, to veterans afflicted with PTSD and TBI.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, nonprofit groups are doing what they can to fill the void. For instance, American Humane&#8217;s\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2562566257605950607LPlnk801642\" class=\"m_-2562566257605950607x_OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/press-release\/american-humane-applauds-introduction-of-pups-for-patriots-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.americanhumane.org\/press-release\/american-humane-applauds-introduction-of-pups-for-patriots-act\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1550873210944000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE9HRNMBdhZRRFV7ORbB1yZN8kvmQ\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Pups4Patriots<\/a>\u00a0program finds dogs in need of homes and trains them to become service animals for military veterans struggling with the invisible wounds of war, potentially saving lives at both ends of the leash.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ya, there are countless GoFundMe accounts raising money for PTSD puppies.\u00a0 No dog on the planet is worth $30,000.\u00a0 Getting federal funding for &#8220;anecdotal&#8221; therapy is nutz.\u00a0 I have just a few other points for Mrs. Ganzert &#8230; let veterans take care of veterans and pimp your puppies in some other way.<\/p>\n<p>PTSD is real, it can be devastating for a select very few to deal with.\u00a0 It is grossly over-diagnosed and its impact on an individual over exaggerated by people who use its victims for their own twisted form of philanthropy.<\/p>\n<p>Suicide\u00a0rates among veterans have\u00a0been morphed out of context so many times that civilians seem to think we are all on the verge of jumping off a roof&#8230;or worse.\u00a0 Pushing nonsense\u00a0like the &#8220;22 a Day&#8221;\u00a0 quote just adds to the false impression that we are damaged victims of our service to this country.<\/p>\n<p>There are a far greater number of people in this country that have a severe allergy to dogs than there are PTSD patients that need to prance around with their puppy in public.\u00a0 I watched a woman in her 80&#8217;s being hauled out of Lowes in an ambulance because she had a reaction that was caused from her getting a cart that just moments before had some idiots dog in it.\u00a0 I have no doubt that puppies make many people feel better.\u00a0 If its all about making veterans feel better then I think we should pander to the majority of veterans and pass a Strippers4Patriots program.<\/p>\n<p>I have no idea if\u00a0\u00a0Robin Ganzert is qualified to head such a program.\u00a0 She certainly has that cheesy smile for it.\u00a0 Maybe &#8220;MILFS4Militarymen&#8221;
