{"id":85132,"date":"2019-02-20T12:31:06","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T16:31:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=85132"},"modified":"2022-01-13T20:32:27","modified_gmt":"2022-01-14T01:32:27","slug":"covington-high-students-legal-team-sues-washington-post-fox-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=85132","title":{"rendered":"Covington High student&#8217;s legal team sues Washington Post | Fox News"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/covington-high-students-legal-team-sues-washington-post\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone \" src=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/7f8d41f1-ContentBroker_contentid-99ac115ff1fc44b9a56b400083735417.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"785\" height=\"429\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/video.foxnews.com\/v\/embed.js?id=6004265811001&#038;w=466&#038;h=263\"><\/script><noscript>Watch the latest video at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\">foxnews.com<\/a><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Attorneys representing the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/covington-high-school-students-cleared-of-any-wrongdoing-in-viral-incident-after-independent-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kentucky high school<\/a>\u00a0student involved in a confrontation that went viral on social media last month announced Tuesday that they were suing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/legal-team-of-covington-high-school-student-in-viral-video-prepare-for-possible-libel-fight-release-15-minute-video-of-the-truth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Washington Post\u00a0<\/a>for $250 million in compensatory and punitive damages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hemmerlaw.com\/blog\/for-truth-for-justice-for-nicholas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The lawsuit,<\/a>\u00a0which was filed in federal court in Kentucky, accused The Post of practicing &#8220;a modern-day form of McCarthyism&#8221; by targeting Nicholas Sandmann and &#8220;using its vast financial resources to enter the bully pulpit by publishing a series of false and defamatory print and online articles &#8230; to smear a young boy who was in its view an acceptable casualty in their war against the president.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A few of us were trying to stem the wave of hysterical banter going on when this story broke.\u00a0 I get my share of criticism for what I do and say from time to time.\u00a0 While the families of these kids were hiding their\u00a0children out of concerns for their safety I didn&#8217;t think to make a mockery of the situation was all that funny.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sandmann, a junior at Covington Catholic High School, became a target for outrage after a video of him standing face-to-face with a Native American man,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/native-american-activist-in-viral-confrontation-never-deployed-overseas-marines-say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nathan Phillips<\/a>, while wearing a red &#8220;Make America Great Again&#8221; hat surfaced in January. Sandmann was one of a group of students from Covington attending the anti-abortion March for Life in Washington, D.C., while Phillips was attending the Indigenous Peoples&#8217; March on the same day.<\/p>\n<p>Sandmann and the Covington students were initially accused of initiating the confrontation, but other videos and the students&#8217; own statements showed that they were verbally accosted by a group of black street preachers who were shouting insults both at them and a group of Native Americans. Sandmann and Phillips have both said they were trying to defuse the situation<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We eventually did get what information we could to discredit the individual who was making false claims against these kids into the right hands.\u00a0 I thought it was more important to help defend these kids than to use the situation to promote ourselves.\u00a0 The safety of children will always come before grandstanding with me.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The lawsuit claims The Post &#8220;ignored the truth&#8221; about the incident and says the paper &#8220;falsely accused Nicholas of &#8230; &#8216;accost[ing]&#8217; Phillips by &#8216;suddenly swarm[ing]&#8217; him in a &#8216;threaten[ing]&#8217; and &#8216;physically intimidat[ing]&#8217; manner &#8230; &#8216;block[ing]&#8217; Phillips path, refusing to allow Phillips &#8216;to retreat,&#8217; &#8216;taunting the dispersing indigenous crowd,&#8217; [and] chanting, &#8216;Build that wall,&#8217; &#8216;Trump2020,&#8217; or &#8216;Go back to Africa,&#8217; and otherwise engaging in racist and improper conduct. &#8230;&#8221;Sandmann&#8217;s attorneys accuse The Post of publishing seven &#8220;false and defamatory&#8221; articles about the incident between Jan. 19 and 21 and claim the paper &#8220;knew and intended that its false and defamatory accusations would be republished by others, including media outlets and others on social media.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I apologize if me putting this event on the down low offended some of our regular readers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Last week, investigators hired by the Roman Catholic\u00a0Diocese of Covington concluded that the students did not instigate the confrontation with Phillips.
