I’m not generally a fan of African-American homosexual actors and their antics on and off screen, but this Jussie Smollett character has invaded the news cycle with an accusation that stank to the heavens from day one. There may very well be white racists wearing MAGA hats frequenting sketchy neighborhoods at 0200, just waiting for an African-American homosexual actor to wander by and assault, splash with bleach, and hang a noose on. But it’s unlikely in the extreme.<\/p>\n

\nThe Chicago Police Department believe Empire actor Jussie Smollett staged an attack on himself last month, according to a report.<\/p>\n\u201cChicago Police believe Jussie Smollett paid two men to orchestrate the assault. The sources tell CNN that the two men are now cooperating fully with law enforcement,\u201d tweeted CNN crime and justice reporter Shimon Prokupecz Saturday evening.<\/p>\n
Earlier Saturday, Fox 32 Chicago\u2019s Rafer Weigel, citing several police sources, reported Abimbola \u201cAbel\u201d and Olabinjo \u201cOla\u201d Osundairo \u2014 the two Nigerian brothers arrested and later questioned by police about the alleged incident \u2014 purchased the rope found around the actor\u2019s neck the night of the alleged attack at an ACE hardware store.<\/p>\n
CBS Chicago\u2019s Charlie De Mar reports at least one of the brothers bought the rope at Craft Beaver hardware store the weekend of January 25th. The rope was purchased at the direction of Smollett, De Mar, citing sources, added. <\/p>\n

The dramatic developments come after Chicago police released the two men, citing to \u201cnew evidence\u201d obtained in their interrogations. \u201cDue to new evidence as a result of today\u2019s interrogations, the individuals questioned by police in the Empire case have now been released without charging and detectives have additional investigative work to complete,\u201d said Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.<\/p>\n
In a phone interview with New York Times reporter Sopan Deb, Guglielmi would not confirm Weigel\u2019s report, but did say, \u201cAfter we spoke to the former suspects last night, detectives reached out to Jussie Smollett\u2019s attorneys and expressed interest that we need to talk to him again.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
I’m trying to figure out what the purpose of this bit of street theater-false accusation was, but my mind just doesn’t work that way. <\/p>\n
