\nDems propose ICE cap.<\/p>\n

White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said Sunday that, whatever Congress may propose in a border security compromise, President Donald Trump will get his wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. <\/p>\n

“The president is going to build the wall,” Mulvaney said on “Fox News Sunday.” “This is going to get built with or without Congress.” <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The negotiations hit a roadblock Sunday when Democrats pushed to cap the number of illegal immigrants that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) can detain at one time.<\/p>\n

Democrats on the bipartisan compromise border security committee to fund the wall issued a demand for a \u201ccap\u201d on the number of beds used for detained illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Democrats do not want us to detain, or send back, criminal aliens!\u201d Trump wrote on Twitter. \u201cThis is a brand new demand. Crazy!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor far too long, the Trump administration has been tearing communities apart with its cruel immigration policies,\u201d Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA) said in a statement. \u201cA cap on ICE detention beds will force the Trump administration to prioritize deportation for criminals and people who pose real security threats, not law-abiding immigrants who are contributing to our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump also reacted to the new demands on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Border Committee Democrats are behaving, all of a sudden, irrationally,\u201d he wrote. \u201cNot only are they unwilling to give dollars for the obviously needed Wall (they overrode recommendations of Border Patrol experts), but they don\u2019t even want to take muderers (sic) into custody! What\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Dems are making a strategic error- the wall, fence, barricade, whatever you call it will be built. They could have had extended protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and immigrants with protective status, things the Dems have lobbied for in the past. If they can\u2019t, or won\u2019t come to a consensus they will lose that, and the wall will go up anyway.
