You often need a bit of luck just to make it through the day unscathed.<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes, you need a whole lotta luck.  Or a Guardian Angel working overtime.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s especially true for some duty positions and specialties.  Here\u2019s my pick for perhaps the luckiest guy ever in the history of the US Navy.  <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/GF3Iz7b95-8\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A 5+ minute clip of the incident, uncut, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=unXNdrtf2_g\"><i>can be viewed here<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The incident happened on the <i>USS Theodore Roosevelt<\/I> on 20 February 1991.  The lucky soul was saved from death or permanent disability when a crewmate witnessed him being sucked into the intake and signaled the aircraft\u2019s pilot to kill his engines.  (Other sources say the pilot of the aircraft in question heard his helmet and safety goggles beginning to impact the compressor blades and immediately shut down his engines.)<\/p>\n<p>Remarkably, the man received only relatively minor injuries.  And if he needed new trou and skivvies afterwards  . . . well, I probably would have too.  (smile)<\/p>\n<p>The incident caused a change in Navy flight-deck training and procedures to prevent recurrence.<\/p>\n<p>Enough for today.
