GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham announced on Twitter Tuesday morning that he will introduce legislation similar to any executive order President Trump might issue ending birthright citizenship in the United States.\u00a0He tried to do that in 2010.<\/p>\n
“Finally, a president willing to take on this absurd policy of birthright citizenship,” Graham tweeted Tuesday.\u00a0“In addition, I plan to introduce legislation along the same lines as the proposed executive order from President Trump.”<\/p>\n
Oh, and now<\/em>, the Democrats are experts on the Constitution, as noted [below – my bad!] \u00a0before.<\/p>\n On Tuesday morning, Rep. Justin Amash, a Michigan Republican who frequently vocalizes his differences with the president, emphasized that ending birthright citizenship would require a constitutional amendment.<\/p>\n “A president cannot amend Constitution or laws via executive order,” Amash tweeted. “Concept of natural-born citizen in\u00a014th<\/sup> Amendment\u00a0derives from natural-born subjects in Britain. Phrase ‘and subject to the jurisdiction thereof’ excludes mainly foreign diplomats, who are not subject to U.S. laws.”<\/p>\n Apparently, Amash has forgotten that statute on the books that gives American citizenship to people who were born overseas to American parents, e.g., military and diplomat families stationed in France or Japan or the UK.<\/p>\n So they want to trash the Constitution because of the Electoral College, but they want to keep it, too, because of \u201ccitizenship\u201d stuff. Well, you wouldn\u2018t want to lose all those votes, would you?<\/p>\n Okay. Whatever. \u00a0Pres. Trump certainly does know how to poke the bear when he needs to.<\/p>\n
