WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 John McCain, the six-term Arizona senator and 2008 Republican presidential nominee, has chosen to discontinue medical treatment for his brain cancer, his family said Friday.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the family said McCain had surpassed expectations for survival, but \u201cthe progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict.\u201d The family added, \u201cWith his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The senator, who would be 82 next week, has been away from the Capitol since December. If he should resign his seat or die soon, Republican Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey would name a replacement through the 2020 election. The winner of that election would serve the remainder of McCain\u2019s term through 2022.<\/p>\n

The GOP currently holds a bare 51-49 Senate majority.<\/p>\n

McCain has been a frequent target of criticism from President Donald Trump, especially for his vote against a Republican replacement for \u201cObamacare,\u201d the health care law approved under President Barack Obama.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I hate what cancer does to people.\u00a0 We should have conquered this evil long ago.\u00a0 Maybe if we spend a little more time and money on cancer instead of all the Recreational Outrage over faux racism, sexism, and just about every other “ism” in the world, we can accomplish something worthwhile.\u00a0 \u00a0I do not care for many of McCain’s positions in politics or his lack of accountability over the years.\u00a0 He is loved by many, certainly as a husband and father.\u00a0 Many respect what he went through as a prisoner of war.<\/p>\n

I will not rejoice in his death, but my vision of the world will be slightly brighter.\u00a0 I will not miss him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
