An intruder may have been wounded by an armed homeowner. Police responded to a home in the 900-block of East Fairchild Street, about 12:30 am, Sunday.<\/p>\n

The homeowner reported hearing loud knocking before seeing two men in his backyard. The homeowner told officers he heard someone enter through a window and saw the intruder with a gun. He fired several shots causing the intruders to run away.<\/p>\n

A person of interest, being treated for a gunshot wound, was questioned at a the\u00a0hospital but was uncooperative. Officials say, at this\u00a0time, they’re not able to connect him to the crime.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A Florida man broke into a home and armed himself with the homeowner\u2019s home defense\u00a0shotgun, only to have the homeowner gain back control of the gun and shoot him.<\/p>\n

David Marrero told\u00a0WJXT\u00a0he arrived home from work at around 4 p.m. on Tuesday to find his place ransacked. When he went to his bedroom to investigate further, he encountered 25-year-old Brandon Nicholas\u2014whom he had met a few weeks earlier\u2014in the process of escaping out the window.\u00a0\u00a0As Nicholas turned and saw Marrero, he pulled\u00a0Marrero\u2019s own shotgun, which he had swiped, and pointed it at him.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI got out of the way as fast as I could and he started talking, \u2018Man I\u2019m not going to shoot you,’\u201d Marrero recalled.<\/p>\n

Nicholas might have told Marrero he wasn\u2019t going to shoot him, but he evidently had other ideas.\u00a0\u201cThat\u2019s when I heard the first click,\u201d Marrero said. Thankfully, Marrero\u2019s shotgun was unloaded.\u00a0\u201cHe insisted, \u2018Man I just want to talk to you. I just want to talk to you.\u2019 By that time, he crawled back inside the window,\u201d Marrero said. \u201cHe\u2019s walking backwards with the shotgun on me the whole time. By midway through the hallway, I recognize the guy. I\u2019m like, \u2018I know who you are.\u2019 And then I heard another click.’\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Marrero tried to reason with Nicholas.\u00a0\u00a0\u201c(I told him), \u2018I promise you, just leave. You got my gun. You got my money. Just leave. I won\u2019t call the cops until you leave,’\u201d Marrero said. \u201c\u2018Just give me my shotgun. You\u2019ve taken everything from me.\u2019 And then he got mad and slams it on the couch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sensing an opportunity, Marrero grabbed his home defense shotgun, loaded it and aimed it at Nicholas.\u00a0Marrero then started demanding his belongings back from Nicholas, but the would-be burglar instead started leaning over to look at one of his bags.Things turned physical from there.<\/p>\n

\u201cI took my gun around and flipped it around and\u00a0I smacked him as hard as I could in the back of the neck with the buttstock of the shotgun,\u201d Marrero said. \u201cHe started to crawl back a little bit and he said, \u2018I got something for you now. I got something for you.’\u201d\u00a0 Marrero says Nicholas then reached inside his bag.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cSo when he reached in his bag, going to stand up, I said, \u2018Don\u2019t do it.\u2019\u00a0And then that\u2019s when I shot him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nicholas managed to flee the scene, but was found by police about a mile away after a report of another shooting nearby. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and now faces charges of burglary and committing an act that could cause death.<\/p>\n

Marrero\u2019s wife\u00a0Alisa Stuart told\u00a0WJAX\u00a0that her husband called her and told her that Nicholas had broke in \u201cthrough the window. He ransacked the house. He stole our cash and I shot him in the knee,’\u201d Stuart said.<\/p>\n

Crime is reportedly a growing problem in the area.<\/p>\n
