Wiser. More seasoned. Deadlier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">There\u2019s a controversial idea taking root at the \u00adPentagon: That Marines should wait an enlistment before joining the infantry, coming into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/05\/04\/12-man-rifle-squads-including-a-squad-systems-operator-commandant-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">traditional rifle squads\u00a0<\/a>only after getting some experience in another career field.\u00a0 It would be a profound change that would make\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/07\/17\/squad-leader-shortage-why-the-corps-is-handing-out-big-bucks-for-infantry-ncos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marine infantry units<\/a>\u00a0older, but potentially stacked with additional skill sets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">It would also further blur the line between \u00adconventional infantry Marine and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/04\/13\/are-marsoc-cyber-operators-on-the-horizon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0special operator<\/a>, as they\u2019d be plucked from the same pool.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/salty-marine.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-80954\" src=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/salty-marine-269x333.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/salty-marine-269x333.jpg 269w, https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/salty-marine-243x300.jpg 243w, https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/salty-marine.jpg 508w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I got plucked from the pool&#8230;we just worded it a bit different.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">Whether the 18-year-old grunt Marine model can continue to compete on the future battlefield is a question being scrutinized at the top levels of the Defense Department and among top officials close to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who is himself a former Marine infantry commander.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">One such man leading the charge is a retired general who chairs Mattis\u2019 Pentagon task force focused on boosting lethality of grunts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">\u201cThe optimal age for a close-combat soldier, the \u00adbalance is \u2026 mid to late 20s,\u201d retired Army Maj. Gen. Robert Scales told Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That&#8217;s probably about right, I started at 17.\u00a0 Most are done with their first marriage by their second enlistment, their pay goes out in allotments and the Driftwood has them\u00a0 on the banned list, death doesn&#8217;t scare them anymore.\u00a0 Some of us even have a stripe or two left.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Today\u2019s grunts have increasingly taken up the mantle of special operations missions where small detachments of Marines have deployed to advise and train foreign military units in remote and hostile \u00adenvironments \u2014 missions that require mature \u00adoperators and problem solvers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh, they mean like Marines have always been doing.\u00a0 I can tell them from experience, maturity comes on pretty fast when you&#8217;re on the chopper flying into a country you can not pronounce in the middle of the night.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSignificant focus is being placed on the human dimension,\u201d Marine spokeswoman Capt. Karoline Foote told Marine Corps Times. \u201cWe are evaluating and implementing improvements in how we recruit, train and retain our infantry Marines.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ahh, I have read that kind of stuff before.\u00a0 It&#8217;s one of those &#8220;say nothing in 20 words or more&#8221; things.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe way JSOC [Joint Special Operations Command] operates is a telling point,\u201d he explained.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Aaaaaaand there we have it.\u00a0 People who have no idea what an EGA is, trying to dictate the manner in which Marines are to kill people.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">One option the Corps could consider is saving a large portion of infantry slots for a second enlistment.
