{"id":80944,"date":"2018-08-02T11:00:40","date_gmt":"2018-08-02T15:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=80944"},"modified":"2022-01-13T20:34:51","modified_gmt":"2022-01-14T01:34:51","slug":"defense-department-modifies-deploy-or-get-out-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=80944","title":{"rendered":"Defense Department modifies &#8220;Deploy or get out&#8221; policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/08\/01\/dod-exempts-wounded-warriors-from-deploy-or-get-out\/\">Military Times<\/a> is reporting the new changes to the Defense Department&#8217;s &#8220;Deploy or get out instruction&#8221; .<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">Service members wounded in combat will be exempt from the Defense Department\u2019s new policy to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/02\/05\/deploy-or-get-out-new-pentagon-plan-could-boot-thousands-of-non-deployable-troops\/\">be deployable in 12 months or face separation\u00a0<\/a>from the military, the Pentagon announced this week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">The policy tweak came after criticism that DoD was going to remove personnel who were only in non-deployable status because of their combat injuries, when the overall goal of the program was to target the thousands of military personnel who for fitness, health or other administrative reasons have not been deployable. The initiative is part of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis&#8217; effort to improve the lethality and readiness of the services.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\">\u201cService members whose injuries were the result of hostile action, meet the criteria for awarding of the Purple Heart, and whose injuries were not the result of their own misconduct\u201d are approved for retention, DoD said in its\u00a0July 30 policy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The DoD Instruction is available <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esd.whs.mil\/Portals\/54\/Documents\/DD\/issuances\/dodi\/133245p.pdf?ver=2018-08-01-080044-667\">HERE<\/a> in its entirety.\u00a0 \u00a0They list the exceptions as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\"><b>1. Combat wounded.<\/b>\u00a0\u201cThese are service members whose injuries were the result of hostile action, meet the criteria for awarding of the Purple Heart, and whose injuries were not the result of their own misconduct.\u201d The policy goes on to say that \u201cdisapproval of retention for non-deployable combat wounded service members, who wish to be retained and whose reason for non-deployability is a direct result of their combat wounds, may not be delegated.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\"><b>2. Pregnant and post-partum service members.<\/b>\u00a0Females are exempt for pregnancy-related health conditions during pregnancy through the post-partum period. Under the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esd.whs.mil\/Portals\/54\/Documents\/DD\/issuances\/dodi\/133245p.pdf?ver=2018-08-01-080044-667\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">policy<\/a>, pregnancy is considered a temporary non-deployable status, and the duration of that status after childbirth is left to the individual service secretaries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\"><b>3. Case-by-case exemptions.<\/b>\u00a0The service secretaries may grant exemptions on a case-by-case basis if the service member is filling in a specific position critical to the service.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-12 col-xs-12 col-print-12\">\n<p class=\"element element-paragraph\"><b>4.
