Pace<\/strong>, US Navy, assigned to the crew of the <i>USS Oklahoma<\/i>, was lost at Pearl Harbor, HI, on 7 December 1941.  He was accounted for on 20 July 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>CM3c William L. Kvidera<\/strong>, US Navy, assigned to the crew of the <i>USS Oklahoma<\/i>, was lost at Pearl Harbor, HI, on 7 December 1941.  He was accounted for on 26 July 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Cpl Claire E. Goldtrap<\/strong>, USMC, assigned to Company A, 2nd Amphibian Tractor Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, was lost on Tarawa on 20 November 1943.  He was accounted for on 23 July 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Pfc Merton R. Riser<\/strong>, USMC Reserve, assigned to Company K, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, was lost on Tarawa on 20 November 1943.  He was accounted for on 26 July 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Pfc Robert L. Zehetner<\/strong>, USMC Reserve, assigned to Company F, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, was lost on Tarawa on 20 November 1943.  He was accounted for on 23 July 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1st Lt. Ottaway B. Cornwell<\/strong>, US Army, assigned to 4th Fighter Squadron, 52nd Fighter Group, Twelfth (XII) Air Force, US Army Air Forces, was lost in France on 27 January 1944.  He was accounted for on 25 July 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>PFC Leslie E. Shankles<\/strong>, US Army, assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, was lost in France on 14 October 1944.  He was accounted for on 30 July 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Capt. Lawrence E. Dickson<\/strong>, US Army, assigned to 100th Fighter Squadron, 332nd Fighter Group, US Army Air Forces, was lost in Austria on 23 December 1944.  He was accounted for on 27 July 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>PVT John B. Cummings<\/strong>, US Army, assigned to A Company, 276th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division, was lost in France on 31 December 1944.  He was accounted for on 23 July 2018.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>From Korea<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Sgt Meredith F. Keirn<\/strong>, USMC, assigned to Company F, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, was lost in North Korea on 30 November 1950.  He was accounted for on 31 May 2018.  (See note.)<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>From Southeast Asia<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>None<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Welcome back, elder brothers-in-arms.  Our apologies that your return took so long.<\/p>\n<p>Rest easy.  You\u2019re home now.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>. . .<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over 72,000 US personnel remain unaccounted for from World War II; over 7,600 US personnel remain unaccounted for from the Korean War; over 1,500 remain unaccounted for in Southeast Asia (SEA); 126 remain unaccounted for from the Cold War; 5 remain unaccounted for from the Gulf Wars; and 1 individual remains unaccounted for from Operation Eldorado Canyon. Comparison of DNA from recovered remains against DNA from some (but not all) blood relatives can assist in making a positive ID for unidentified remains that have already been recovered, or which may be recovered in the future.<\/p>\n<p>On their web site&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/Contact\/ContactUs.aspx\"><em>Contact Us<\/em><\/a>&#8221; page, DPAA now has FAQs. The answer to one of those FAQs describes who can and cannot submit DNA samples useful in identifying recovered remains. The chart giving the answer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/portals\/85\/Images\/DNA.jpg\"><em>can be viewed here<\/em><\/a>. The text associated with the chart is short and can be viewed in DPAA&#8217;s FAQs.<\/p>\n<p>If your family lost someone in one of these conflicts and you qualify to submit a DNA sample, please arrange to submit one. By doing that you just might help identify the remains of a US service member who\u2019s been repatriated but not yet been identified \u2013 as well as a relative of yours, however distant.  Or you may help to identify remains to be recovered in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Everybody deserves a proper burial. That\u2019s especially true for those who gave their all while serving this nation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><i><u>Author&#8217;s Notes<\/u>:  <\/p>\n<p>1.  An article announcing the recovery, identification, and accounting for of three of these elder brothers-in-arms (FM1c Pace, 1st Lt Cornwell, and PVT Cummings) should have appeared on Sunday, 29 July 2018.  <\/p>\n<p>I drafted an article to that effect.  Unfortunately, because of other events ongoing at that time I simply didn&#8217;t remember to post it.<\/p>\n<p>2.  Sgt Keirn was accounted for on 31 May, but as best I can tell notice of his accounting was not posted to DPAA&#8217;s &#8220;Recently Accounted For&#8221; page for some time afterwards.
