Oakly was barking.<\/p>\n

That was unusual, because she seldom actually barks, especially at 7:20 a.m.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why Oakly\u2019s owner, Owen Turman, decided to get out of bed and head downstairs to quiet the dog. It was Sunday morning, after all.<\/p>\n

What Turman didn\u2019t expect was a strange man in his outdoor sunroom, trying to get into the house.<\/p>\n

Turman, who lives on Culpepper Road off Wilkesboro Highway, quickly snatched his .22-caliber bolt-action rifle and went around back to confront the stranger.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw him turn the handle on my door and twist real hard trying to get in,\u201d said Turman, recounting the events of April 8. \u201cWhen I saw that, I instantly put my rifle up at him.\u201d<\/p>\n

He asked the man what he was doing, told him to get away from the door and to lie on the ground. The stranger followed orders, but didn\u2019t answer questions, like who he was or what he was doing. Turman, still in his underwear, called police.<\/p>\n

And he waited.<\/p>\n

His fianc\u00e9 and two daughters, one 6 years old and the other an infant, remained inside, unaware of what had unfolded outside.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy main concern was I have to protect my home and my family,\u201d Turman said. \u201cThe only thing I was thinking (was) keeping my family safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

He couldn\u2019t help but worry about the possibility of his oldest daughter coming downstairs and finding her dad pointing a gun at another man. He was worried he\u2019d have to shoot someone in front of his little girl.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want her to know home is a safe place,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Turman said that while the suspect lay on the ground, he began rummaging through his pockets. He kept trying to take needles out of his pockets and throw them under Turman\u2019s vehicle, Turman recalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, man, you\u2019re making me nervous,\u201d Turman recalled telling the man before ordering him to stop. But the man continued to dig in his pockets. An Iredell County deputy ran up seconds later.<\/p>\n

Turman said the intruder struggled with the deputy but eventually was taken into custody.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

From Memphis, Tennessee<\/a>;<\/p>\n

According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, the Papa John’s employee was making a delivery at the Southwind Lake apartments off Shelby Drive when he was approached by two suspects.<\/p>\n

He told police one of the suspects pointed something at him that looked like a gun. He was scared for his safety and opened fire.<\/p>\n

A teen was struck and rushed to the Regional Medical Center in critical condition.<\/p>\n

Two other teens and an 18-year-old named Tjohntay Woods were taken into custody and charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated assault.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
