{"id":777,"date":"2007-10-24T09:06:56","date_gmt":"2007-10-24T13:06:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/2007\/10\/24\/burmese-live-in-climate-of-fear\/"},"modified":"2008-11-12T13:01:54","modified_gmt":"2008-11-12T18:01:54","slug":"burmese-live-in-climate-of-fear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=777","title":{"rendered":"Burmese live in climate of fear (Updated)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Bush Administration today <a href=\"http:\/\/a257.g.akamaitech.net\/7\/257\/2422\/01jan20071800\/edocket.access.gpo.gov\/2007\/E7-20962.htm\" target=\"_blank\">published laws restricting<\/a> assets of some members of the Myanmar government;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In response to the Government of Burma&#8217;s continued repression<br \/>\nof the democratic opposition in Burma, and consistent with Executive<br \/>\nOrder 13310 of July 28, 2003 and Executive Order 13448 of October 18,<br \/>\n2007, this final rule amends the Export Administration Regulations<br \/>\n(EAR) to move Burma into more restrictive country groupings and impose<br \/>\na license requirement for exports, reexports or transfers of most items<br \/>\nsubject to the EAR to persons listed in or designated pursuant to<br \/>\nExecutive Orders 13310 and 13448.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And the Australian government is &#8220;fleshing out&#8221; it&#8217;s own program of restrictions according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/070925\/2\/14ict.html\" target=\"_blank\">Australian press<\/a>;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Last month, Prime Minister John Howard announced the moves in an effort to convince the military rulers to tone down their hard line against pro-democracy demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the measures would be directed against 418 individuals, made up of members of the Burmese regime, their associates and supporters.<\/p>\n<p>Those on the list include members of the State Peace and Development Council, their spouses and children, as well as regional commanders and their immediate family.<\/p>\n<p>Also on the list are deputy regional commanders, government ministers, deputy ministers and their immediate families.\u00c2<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/10\/23\/AR2007102302302.html?hpid=topnews\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post<\/a> reports that it&#8217;ll probably do little in the short term, since Burmese people live in fear of the Myanmar\u00c2\u00a0government;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But they talk about it only in whispers, looking over their shoulders to see who might be listening. The government has blocked access to several Internet chat and e-mail sites, and people assume their phone conversations are not private, given that the government controls all the country&#8217;s telecommunications.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The people, we all feel so cramped up inside,&#8221; said a 66-year-old man in Rangoon. &#8220;We cannot talk. We cannot do anything. This government, they are killers. They have guns, but the people have nothing.&#8221; He pulled out a handkerchief and wiped his eyes. &#8220;I&#8217;m sorry, but I don&#8217;t have anyone to talk to about these things.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sounds like a commercial for the Second Amendment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adnkronos.com\/AKI\/English\/Politics\/?id=1.0.1467108513\" target=\"_blank\">Global protests<\/a> are being planned, specifically targeting Chinese Embassies;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Demonstrations will take place in 12 cities around the world against Burma&#8217;s continuing detention of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>Protests are being planned at Chinese embassies, as campaigners say Beijing holds the key to Suu Kyi&#8217;s release.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>UPDATE:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20071024\/ap_on_re_as\/myanmar;_ylt=Arh9gUV.Lfl0JvhXqg.S3zWs0NUE\" target=\"_blank\">AP writes<\/a> that China and Russia have blocked UN sanctions against the Myanmar government;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>China and Russia urged Myanmar&#8217;s military rulers to talk with the country&#8217;s opposition but said Wednesday that they opposed any U.N. sanctions against the junta.<br \/>\n\u00c2<br \/>\nThe two veto-wielding countries on the U.N.
