Hobel also filed a separate lawsuit against New Castle police Chief Bobby Salem for defamation. Both suits were written by hand and filed without a lawyer.<\/p>\n
He claims that he was only a suspect in two robberies. <\/p>\n
The press conference, called by Lamancusa, addressed an incident earlier in the day on Dec. 13 in which Shenango Township police had tried to pull over Hobel\u2019s car after it allegedly was seen at a convenience store where a robbery had occurred. Hobel led police from multiple jurisdictions on a high-speed chase through multiple counties. The chase ended on Interstate 376 in Union Township, when he pulled the car over and held a gun to the head of a woman inside, threatening to shoot her.<\/p>\n
A New Castle policeman in turn fired shots through the car window at Hobel and freed the woman. Hobel was hit by the gunfire multiple times in the chest and was hospitalized for his injuries. He was arrested upon his release.<\/p>\n
Police learned through the investigation that Hobel had used a toy gun \u2014 a plastic replica of a semiautomatic gun \u2014 in the incident.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Oh, by the way, he’s been charged for another robbery since the incident that triggered the lawsuit. He was also on parole when the above incident occurred.<\/p>\n
Hobel claims in his complaint that Salem and Lamancusa caused him to lose close friends and loved ones and the trust and respect of the community because of what he claims are \u201cfalse allegations.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hobel claims in his filing to be a well-respected mason in the community and that comments that he attributes to Lamancusa and Salem will cost him numerous job opportunities. He further contends that his family \u201chas been forced to suffer friends as well as the respect of the community,\u201d and that he, himself, suffered \u201cemotionally and mental agony.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
