According to BBC<\/a>, Zimbabwe’s socialist president Robert Mugabe has been placed under house arrest by the country’s military;<\/p>\n

Troops are patrolling the capital, Harare, after they seized state TV and said they were targeting “criminals”.<\/p>\n

The move may be a bid to replace Mr Mugabe with his sacked deputy, Emmerson Mnangagwa, BBC correspondents say.<\/p>\n

Mr Mnangagwa’s dismissal last week left Mr Mugabe’s wife Grace as the president’s likely successor.<\/p>\n

Heavy gun and artillery fire could be heard in northern parts of Harare early on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Mr Mugabe, 93, has dominated the impoverished country’s political scene since it gained independence from the UK in 1980.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The UK’s Telegraph<\/a> published a statement from the Army;<\/p>\n

“It is not a military takeover of government,” an army spokesman said in a televised statement. “We wish to assure the nation that his excellency the president… and his family are safe and sound and their security is guaranteed.<\/p>\n

“We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country in order to bring them to justice.<\/p>\n

“As soon as we have accomplished our mission we expect that the situation will return to normalcy.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

They should have removed Mugabe thirty years ago, sometime before unemployment reached 90%, but better late than never. <\/p>\n

It seems that this whole thing was an attempt to prevent Mugabe’s wife, Grace, from becoming president instead of the constitutional Vice President Mnangagwa who fled the country last week but he has returned to take office as President after the military stabilized conditions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
