Stars & Stripes<\/a> reports that Marine General Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the US should just assume that North Korea can target cities on our mainland with their nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

American intelligence officials believe North Korea could be able to strike the U.S. mainland as early as late 2018. Dunford, who is expected to be confirmed easily to serve a second term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs, said Tuesday that he agrees with that assessment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether it\u2019s three months or six months or 18 months, it is soon,\u201d he said. \u201cWe ought to conduct ourselves as though it is just a matter of time, a matter of very short time, before North Korea has that capability.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The North Koreans claim that the US has declared war on them and they threaten to act like they’re at war with us, like they haven’t been doing that already.<\/p>\n

Dunford, who did not specifically comment on the political rhetoric, said the United States, for now, is adequately protected against threats to U.S. territory. But he urged lawmakers to invest in upgrades to the nation\u2019s ballistic missile defense, which will be needed as North Korea \u2013 and other nations \u2013 increase their capabilities.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrankly, I think we should assume today that North Korea has that capability and has the will to use that capability,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to Newsweek<\/a> the Russians have been flying their aircraft in practice runs at the Chinese and North Korean borders;<\/p>\n

Russia, like China, formally opposes North Korea\u2019s nuclear ambitions. However both Moscow and Beijing have blamed U.S. military backing of South Korea and Japan for Pyongyang scaling up its nuclear weapons program.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month Russian President Vladimir Putin hinted that his country was coming to accept North Korea\u2019s nuclear capabilities as a certainty rather than a possibility, telling the U.S. that irrespective of sanctions, North Koreans would \u201ceat grass\u201d if it meant acquiring nuclear arms.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
