So, just how is Seattle\u2019s $15 minimum wage working out?\u00a0 It\u2019s helping the \u201cworking poor\u201d, right?<\/p>\n

Well, according to a study by the University of Washington \u2013 that would be a, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 In fact, it\u2019s hurting them considerably.<\/p>\n

The working poor are making more per hour but taking home less pay<\/u>. The University of Washington paper asserts the new wages boosted worker pay by 3 percent, but also resulted in a 9-percent reduction in hours and a $125 cut to the monthly paychecks<\/u>.<\/p>\n

The law also cost the city 5,000 jobs<\/span>, the report said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Hmm.\u00a0 Lower average monthly income for the working poor, plus fewer jobs overall.\u00a0 Yeah, that’s really<\/em><\/span> helping the working poor.<\/p>\n

This was completely predictable by anyone with any common sense whatsoever who also understands even basic economics.\u00a0 Businesses exist to make a profit, not as public service employment programs.\u00a0 Some jobs simply are not worth $15 per hour.\u00a0 If a locality forces businesses to pay more than a job is worth, businesses will cut hours or jobs (or both) and automate instead.<\/p>\n
